I'm looking to get information about my eligibility for the GI Bill.

-NAPS
-Graduated the Naval Academy
-Went to flight school (attrited after 2 years)
-Redesignated into another community (present)

I am currently at 4 years and 3 months active duty. My question is whether my time at NAPS counts towards the GI Bill? Do my 2 years at flight school count towards the 5 years I owe for the Naval Academy? Next year would put me at 5 years and I would be leaving around November 2020. I will weigh my decision based on the answers to the two questions above.

Thank you for any and all help!

First, you should only make a decision based on primary and official sources, not on opinions posted in an unofficial Internet forum.

To the best of my knowledge, you must satisfy your SA obligation first, the 5 years. I believe flight school counts. I don’t believe NAPS counts, but I realize I don’t recall. After you satisfy that, the ticker starts for accumulating served time for Post 9-11 GI Bill benefits. That’s why you see a lot of SA and ROTC grads staying on AD a few more years to maximize the percentage of GI Bill benefits earned. I think it is 36 months of continuous [key element] service that earns 100% max educational benefit. 30-36 is 90%, and so on.

Of course, read the va.gov site in detail. USNA Admissions may be able to confirm your service obligation questions. Almost all universities and colleges these days have a certified veteran educational benefits advisor in the registrar or student affairs office. There are also certified Veteran Service Officers (VSO) with various groups such as American Legion, VFW, DAV, your county.

If you leave at 5 years, my guess is you are leaving benefit money on the table. Career counselors in your unit or at the base may have received training; find the TAP course staff.
