Question: My son went to NASS last Summer and fell in love with the USNA. He was just waitlisted for NAPS but has an LOA for US Merchant Marine Academy. I'm asking this forum because I need an unbiased response and I don't think I'll get that on the USMMA forum. Navy is where he'll eventually land regardless. What would you do?

If I were your son, I'd wait till May 1. If he hasn't heard anything, I would accept USMMA. If I do get NAPS past May 1, I can always decline USMMA after accepting and make a waitlisted candidate very happy.

What percent of NAPS gets into the USNA?

Of those that complete the program successfully it’s about 100%. The requirements are to complete all academics, be in good standing for conduct, apply for all nom sources and pass the USNA PRT. For those who do this, they get into USNA. Some Midn Candidates leave because it’s not the right fit or they don’t make it academically. A few might not make it for the PRT.

OP -- Does Son have an Offer of Appointment to USMMA, or an LOA ? If just an LOA, what is the contingency ? Until he has an Offer of Appointment in hand, neither is a sure thing, and this is largely a theoretical discussion.

If DS has an offer of Appointment to USMMA -- I am the biggest supporter of NAPS, and love Navy, but I would recommend taking the bird in hand and go to USMMA. I like the USMMA curriculum, and wish I knew more about it when I was applying.. (One of my HS classmates went to USMMA, and until he go in, I had never heard of it !). As you aware -- he can commission into any Branch of the Service, and if he wants to go SWO, I would even suggest that the sea time is actually an advantage over a USNA grad.

It's an letter of appointment, but has to be cleared medically; which shouldn't be an issue. He got a heat rash on his arm when he was 13 and the doctor prescribed him eczema cream for quick relief...big mistake by the doc.

Thanks for the reassurance on USMMA.
