National Guard Recruiter - New Enlistment Option?

Hi! What are your thoughts on this text I just received from the Nation Guard recruiter:

Okay so long story short. The Oklahoma Army National Guard has been granted a new enlistment option ! This is no gimmick, it literally will only be available for 30 days. Your son will not go to Basic Training until he graduates his senior year.
If he gets accepted into west point we would release his contract so he could attend.
He would have time in service as well as health insurance, and will get paid Monthly during this period.

*** For the record, I really do not want him to go this route. It is his decision however. If he does not receive an appointment from West Point or USNA, his plan B is ROTC at a civilian college or one of the senior military colleges. Thank you for educating me!

Good question. We live in Oklahoma so I am not sure if that would work? Is it state specific?
National Guard service is state specific. If he signs up for the OK National Guard, he serves in the OK National Guard, as far as I know.

Yes, you can transfer states. I did this. I enlisted in the Army Reserves drilling in NY, but then transferred to the VA NG where I was attending university. You just need to find a unit to accept you.
I’m pretty sure if he does ROTC he is also released unless he is doing the SMP (Simultaneous Membership Program). That is a program where you serve in the Guard or Reserves as a Cadet while also doing ROTC.

BTW, you can also do this between your junior and senior year of HS.
You go to basic training before your senior year of HS, then advanced training between graduation from HS and college.
You can NOT be deployed while in high school. If accepted to a SA you don’t go to advanced training over the summer.
While it’s tough to get a service nomination this route you get points for being prior service if you get a regular nomination.

Lots of older threads about enlisting as a roundabout way to an SA. If either parent is working, likely their employer's health insurance already covers their children still in h.s. so not sure that is really any kind of benefit. I would imagine the recruiter is hoping the candidate gets turned down for a SA and then is obligated to the National Guard. If his goal is to attend an SA (or go ROTC in college), not sure how pursuing this would be of any benefit.

Revives an older thread and gets banned the same day!

On topic….I don’t see how enlisting in the NG would serve the candidate any benefit based on their goals in this case. Unless serving as enlisted is a goal. The NG offer doesn’t seem like anything “new” either. I suggest having the candidate speak to a PMS at their local college to discuss goals and get a suggested plan from them, not an enlisted recruiter.
This advice is for anyone considering enlisting to “bump” their chances of being accepted to an SA.
It would be interesting to hear an update and the outcome from the OP.

For the OP it gives them another nomination source. I’ve known some Cadets who actually went this route. It’s a route. Not for everyone.
Also, I think the “30 days only” part from the recruiter is based upon when the OP was posted, April. Summer basic training slots normally go quickly and I would actually be surprised if any were left in April.
