My son was recently notified that he was added to the National Waiting List for the USMA at Westpoint. He is hoping for an appointment to USNA, but there has been little notifications coming out of them. Does anyone here know if the USNA informs candidates when they are added to the waiting list?? Any insights are appreciated.

This is something of an indirect answer, but the "National Waiting List" letter your son received from WP is likely a "3Q" letter. It's something of a misnomer that it includes the NWL verbiage because it can mislead applicants into thinking that they lost their MOC slate and are down to waiting on the NWL for a spot . . . which is NOT what it actually means. Any number of WP applicants have posted that they received one of these, only to be followed within a couple weeks by an appointment.

Anyway, as for your question, I don't believe Annapolis sends out 3Q letters. I don't know, however, whether they otherwise inform applicants that they are on an NWL at any point in the process.

USNA does not inform about the "National Waiting List" as USMA does. The only wait list that I know of is the much smaller wait list that USNA set up for the last few people who are "on the bubble" after they have sent out acceptances to the anticipated class on or about mid-April. There are a small number who have not been accepted and get asked if they are willing to go onto a "Wait List". That much smaller group gets smaller through the rest of the time till I day as people either get accepted or USNA issues a TWE.

This happened to my son! He woke me up at midnight one night so upset letting me know he didn’t get into West Point and was put on the National waiting list. I had to explain to him what that meant and that it was a good thing. What a roller coaster of emotions we went through that week! He received the call from our congressman exactly one week later notifying him of his appointment!

Terminology varies between the SA's, so you have to be sure which SA is being referenced. In some years, USNA has had a 'wait list' toward the end of the appointment process and some of those were offered appointments as others turned theirs down since that have a target class size to work toward. That is different from the "National Wait List" or have also seen the term "National Pool" where many candidates go after getting their MOC NOM. USNA does not routinely tell applicants if they are 3Q, so you also can't make assumptions about your status until you officially hear from them. For those not close to the process or experiencing it for the first time, I can see how terminology might get jumbled or misinterpreted.
