Received a letter that DS is qualified and is put on National Waiting List. What are his chances? I’ve read some info but would like to see if someone here was put on NWL and got an appointment.

Truthfully, no one really knows. He's competing with all the other candidates who didn't win their slate and while I'm sure your son's stats/ecs are highly competitive, so are everyone else's. Of course, that's no reason to lose hope. Each year, USMA appoints hundreds of candidates from the NWL. Additionally, many people on these forums have been in your son's shoes, and have been appointed in the end.

Here's a previous thread for more info: https://www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/placed-on-national-waiting-list.79526/

I am pretty sure getting put on the NWL doesn’t mean your slate was decided on. I got put on the NWL about a month ago towards the end of December then appointed about a week or two after. All it means is your application is qualified. I believe everyone that is appointed is placed on it.

Nobody knows the chances of anyone. I got the NWL letter back in December so I'm pretty sure I didn't win my slate, but it's certainly possible that your DS won his/her slate and admissions is still waiting to get back to you. Either way, the NWL is a good place to be.

To add what others said above, it appears that this is their version this year of a "3Q" letter. The reference to NWL, though, is kind of misleading because -- as my son found out last week -- it does not actually mean, "You lost your slate, etc." My son got the same letter January 1 and was offered appointment last week.

This is a good sign. Top 150 candidates from NWL by law will be appointed. By class 2027 data, 1788 candidates are 3q + Nom. By yield rate of 78%_80%, total appointments come out will be around 1538. That means most of qualified candidate will be appointed. After the math , there are 250 left on the list. However, from the 2027 data says usmaps school plus civil preschool (these are from 2026 unappointed directly) 171+20. Then we only 59 left on the list of 1788( many of them are already directly appointed) https://www.westpointaog.org/about/west-point-preparatory-scholarship-program/
even you are ranking the last one on the NWL, I feel you still can contact your field officer or RC to request a ROTC scholarship or something else. It is very hard to get to 3 Q and Nom. They will love to have good candidate in the hand for next year. They can send you to prepschools or ROTC to wait until next year. Prep schools are guaranteed to be accepted unless you are really really bad. Therefor, this is just a waiting game. Be patient and calm. Good luck.

This is another one that comes up every year. The NWL at USMA is not a typical waiting list like other colleges. Once your file has been qualified essentially everyone is placed on the NWL as a holding pattern. Once the deadline passes, the majority of slates are resolved. The application window does not close until the end of January so no slates were resolved in December.

It's merely a holding pattern until they choose the appointments. All good things, be happy :)

Wow! What a great visual and explanation. Thank you!

Just reading everyone’s posts brings me back to this point last year. Our DS was put on the NWL the minute his medical finally cleared last January 2023 and received his appointment 5 days later. So it really is a “holding pattern” pattern. Now he is a plebe for class of 2027. Things will work out- patience is key! Good luck to all!

Fingers crossed over here! Medical was cleared yesterday, letter stating 3Q and on NWL on portal today!

This explanation is incredibly helpful. Thank you. My DD received notice today that she is fully qualified. Those pushups kicked her butt, but the admission board finally approved her. She will continue to work with her trainer to get stronger. She has the principle nomination from her congressman, so we are hopeful that this all leads to an appointment. We will wait and see. Not counting any chickens before they hatch.

I think she is in good shape. Principal takes the slate for sure by LAW unless you are really medical and CFA failed. Principal plus 3 Q will have very very big chances. I want to say 99%. Just wait. The reason she haven’t got the appointment maybe she started the application late. My son principal plus 3 Q got appointments after new year. He started his application as early as June. And through everything in by September. Clear all the things he need by 12/15. Then appointment came in 1/05. Early bird can get worm. The appointment will keep come out until May.

Thanks for the encouragement. I wish I could be as certain. We will wait.
