Should I attend the Naval Academy XC Camp? The first session begins the day after my NASS session ends so it wouldn't be a problerm logistically. I currently run track and XC and I am very interested in running for the Naval Academy if I receive an appointment. However, I can't really justify the $725 price tag and I was wondering if anyone here had any insight as to whether or not the camp is worth it.

My son went last year and for him it was definitely worth getting to know the coaching staff and meet other applicants and Mids. He really enjoyed it. It was not a high level training, improve your times totally worth the money like a personal trainer “worth the money” so if that is what you are looking for, then no it isn’t that kind of camp. It might be just as worth it to email the coach and see if he’s around the yard at anytime to meet before/during or after NASS.

Yeah I emailed the XC coach and I asked him if it would be possible for me to get runs in for my XC training while I'm attending NASS.

I agree, my son went the last two years and met many great mids from the team and developed a relationship with the coaching staff that found them checking the status of his application, which isn’t a bad thing given how difficult the process is. I’m happy to say he has an appointment for the class of ‘27 with the intention of trying to walk on.

As I’m sure you know, you can’t participate in practices (if they have them) due to NCAA rules, but hopefully there will be some Mids around that you can get a run in with. (As an added bonus to attending the camp, my son got to know some of the team and then he ran with them while he was at a CVW.)

You won't. NASS is a full schedule.

My son went to NASS and the XC/TF camp last summer. 2 very different experiences but he enjoyed both quite a bit. XC/TF camp is a lot less intense than NASS and there will be a broad range of kids some who are just there for a fun running camp and some who are interested in USNA. You have a lot of free time during the camp whereas NASS is almost no free time at all.

an opinion

if you are being recruited for xc it will (should) be because of your hs times, counties, states, nationals etc. The same way other colleges would be recruiting you,

Those sports camps, and I am not referring to cc camps but the USNA camps I do know of, are money makers. Just like every other college summer sports camp,is.

A “recruit day “ which some sport have is completely different. It still costs to attend but there the coaches are actually working with you and observing first hand,

That's up to you and your budget. DS attended last year and it was a great first experience at the USNA. The coaches were great. He only had good things to say about the mids helping and the athletes he was paired with. There were a couple of kids doing both SS and xc camp so it is doable.

If you can't justify it, then there is no reason you have to do both. My son is doing SS this year and not XC camp. Though it was a great experience, we could not justify the extra cost or time away from other commitments this summer. You decide where your priorities are. Look at the XC and track, recruit and try out times, see where you stand, continue to train hard. IMO, there are other ways to get to know the team and coaches if you are a good candidate. Either way, the decision you make is not wrong.

I'd like to add to this. If you want to experience USNA and did not get in to summer stem or summer seminar, the athletic camps are an excellent way to get get a glimpse. The athletes meet other like-minded athletes, get to meet the coaches and midshipman, ask questions, stay in the dorms and eat in King Hall.

DS, admitted to the incoming class of 2027, attended track camp after his 10th grade year. Attended NASS after 11th grade.

The combination of both experiences galvanized his decision that USNA was the place he wanted to be. So he put the work in both academically and on the track, and ended up as a recruited athlete for this incoming class.

84 days until I-day, but who’s counting? It’s been a long road!
