Does anyone know exactly what this program entails? Its an option on the NROTC application, and I am planning on studying International Relations, so I am extremely interested in it.

I have not been able to find any decent amount of information on it, and Officer who interviewed me hadn't even heard of it before.

good question!

I have been curious about this as well. Not much info out there and at a recent Service Academy Day we attended, the NROTC representative had never heard of it! I am curious as to how it affects chances for a scholarship.

I actually know a lot about it because I was considering it for a long time.

Essentially, LREC is listed as a Tier 3 major. From what I was told, getting an LREC offer is very competitive (they only give 25-35 annually).

Once you're in LREC, you're required to major in international relations and minor in a specific foreign language- or vise versa. With that, you'll be added to the Navy's LREC database of an "expert" within a certain region and throughout your Naval career your expertise may be called on.

If you have any other specific questions let me know- when I was doing my research on LREC I spoke with recruiters, officers at NROTC units, as well as NROTC midshipmen who were currently pursuing LREC- I'd say I'm pretty well versed on the subject.

Hope this helps

How is it different from regular NROTC? Can you still choose which career to enter after you graduate?

Jdalv, you said you were considering it for a long time. Does this mean you are no longer considering it? If so, may I ask why?

Well I originally became interested in it because, in general, I am very interested in the Middle East and I thought being the Navy "expert" when it came to the Middle East would be pretty cool. Also, I already speak Hebrew fluently.

Ultimately I decided to no longer pursue LREC because of its selectivity. For me, I have no problem majoring in a Tier 1 or Tier 2 major so I really didn't want to risk getting no scholarship If I applied to LREC. Maybe I would've been accepted to LREC, maybe I wouldn't? I simply decided to make the safer decision.

To my knowledge you can still pick your career, just you will be added to the Navy database of people who have expertise in a certain region. If I'm not mistake, the main NROTC website has a little informative blurb about LREC- you should check that out.

Crap, so if I did check the LREC thing, do I have a less of a chance getting a scholarship

Wow...now that this has been brought up I'm also worried about my scholarship. I selected that i would be interested in LREC and filled out that part of the application, but i also commented that I'm just as interested as my intended major, and checked the box indicating so. Does anybody know if this will make the selectors think twice about accepting me? If it would hurt my chances i definately wouldn't have done it!

confused

I am also concerned for my DD. We first heard about LREC from the NROTC officer at U Va. After our visit, we asked several other schools about it and some seemed to want her to choose Tier 1 or 2 instead. During her interview, she expressed concern to the interviewing officer since it's Tier 3, but he encouraged her to "stick to her guns" and stay with the major with which she felt most comfortable. Keeping our fingers crossed it was the correct decision.

What are you talking about, exactly? If I remember correctly, there wasn't anywhere on the application where you could designate any information about LREC. To my information, right under your college list, they simply had you select a major from the drop-tab.

Are you saying that you selected "International Relations" or something like that with the intent of being considered for LREC?

I was also advised to "stick to my guns" and an officer who works at Pensacola even told me that I would be a very competitive candidate for LREC, however he did acknowledge that are somewhat risking your chances at a scholarship by solely relaying on LREC.

For me, I am also comfortable majoring in something like Quantitative Economics, Math, or Physics...

Also, from what I understood, Pensacola can read your application and 'offer' you LREC without you having specified directly that you are interested. For example, at the way beginning of the application they ask you to list the different languages you speak and give remarks per your abilities in that language- I was told that if something seems "enticing" to them, they might contact you about LREC- not the other way around.

But seriously, take my advice as you will. If there's anything I've learned from this process is that nobody truly knows anything and everyone is pretty much speculating :)

My daughter said the same thing. There was nothing on the app regarding LREC. I had emailed someone from the NROTC website and they replied to "check the LREC box". But DD never saw one. She discussed it at her interview so I am assuming they must have put it in her record.

The box was new. I submitted my application around oct. 8thish, and the day i went online to submit it a new box had appeared at the top of the final page where you list your academic "NROTC" interests that asked about LREC, as well as about if you qualify for "in state tuition" at the state school you selected and why not if so. I'm so confused and really worried about all of this because I don't qualify for that, have no idea how to find out, and i also didn't think that LREC could hurt my chances if i'm also happy with pursuing another major on scholarship...

Interesting... I completed my app around early August and there was nothing like you just mentioned. Guess this is a new-ish thing.

What did the LREC box actually say. Was it just like "select if you could be interested in LREC" or was it something like, "click this box if you are committing yourself to applying for LREC"?

LREC scholarships yet?

Just wondering if anyone has received an LREC scholarship yet...any news?
