Just a little background I'm applying to USMA Class of 2027, have received an LOA, received a nomination and have been academically and physically qualified. I emailed DODMERB about my medical exam that had taken over a month to process and they just recently replied by saying,"We have reviewed your exam and it looks like you will need to be reviewed for a waiver for the USMA. We are sending the Academies updates periodically so your Admissions portal will update sometime in the future" How long will this take and what are my chances of receiving a waiver and becoming qualified?

There is no definitive answer to your chances of getting a waiver. There are a lot of factors, such as what is the condition for which the waiver would be requested. As far as timing, West Point does not have to fill out its class until next spring. So you may end up waiting a while. Admissions focus will be on those deemed qualified and ready for consideration for appointment first.

I saw somewhere DoDMERB is sending batches of reviewed files every 2 weeks. If your medical issues aren't severe, chances are high - meaning your "condition" will not affect your ability to perform physical tasks required. Here is the sequence of events I was told would happen after a waiver is requested:
- waiver requested
- sent to admissions or medical people at West Point or both (i forgot)
- reviewed by medical ppl
- decided by medical ppl
- voted on by whole medical committee
- sent to admissions
- sent to you
something like that - i know it's sent to the medical people and at some point it is voted on. it's quite a long process, but since you have an LOA i wouldn't worry unless your condition is severe.

The possibility of obtaining a waiver is so specific to your medical condition(s) and medical background that no one can speculate with any certainty as to the chances. I will say that USMA is a little different from other SAs in that even if the doctors issue a “recommend grant“ determination your waiver would still come back to an admissions waiver committee for final review and determination. This process took about three (3) months for my son. He had a very straight forward head injury with brief hospital stay a few years prior. All resolved and we were ready with all paperwork and hospitalization records. Once the Army staff physicians send it back to admissions (if they recommend the waiver be granted) it generally will take two or three weeks before you would know or an appointment would be offered. Admissions asked my son and I to be available when their committee met, in case they had additional questions. I think the waiver committee met on a Tuesday one the appointments go out on Fridays (at least last spring.) Good luck!

I know this is kind of a late reply, but i was practically in the exact same boat as you: LOA, nom, and now 3 Q’d. I had a requested waiver for my vision that appeared on my portal on 9/21. Just today, 12/3, it changed my status from “Requested Waiver” to “Qualified.” Only time will tell. Best of luck.

My kid got a USMA LOA in August and a Army ROTC Scholarship in October and he never saw any movement on his waiver request before he bailed in March and went with USAFA. AF was very fast and he went with them as that also was his first pick.

For your vision disqualification, did you have to send any additional information regarding your vision? Did DoDmerb ask you to send additional information or did you just send it on your own? For example, taking another eye exam?

So for USNA, no. They granted me a waiver without any AMI. For USMA, yes. They requested a corneal topography exam and that was sent to them.
