No Class Rank Effect On WCS?

Hi all -
Just wanted to ask a quick question regarding my WCS score if my school doesn't rank. I understand that the SAT is 40% of the WCS, while school academics are 20%. How would the 20% be affected by my lack of class rank? How much weight will my transcript hold versus the SAT?

Thank you in advance.

I don’t know the exact percentage/number answer to your question, but USNA has been at this a really long time, and is able to figure this out. Many schools don’t rank. It’s pretty common. Don’t worry about this.

Our school doesn’t rank, my boys made it in.

Let us know the source of your whole candidate reference. USNA has not been known to publish it. If you have found the actual algorithm, that is a gold nugget of data.

There are for-profit academy admissions companies out there which provide best estimates, but they are not primary official sources. These firms are perfectly fine business resources staffed by people who were formerly associated with various commissioning programs while on active duty (as many here are) and retain good connections and offer valuable insights - but their work products, advice and tools are not official primary source material. As with posters here, it’s “to the best of our knowledge.” Just build that awareness into your reliance on any non-USNA internet resources.

The old Rand study, right, with even older data sets.
How old is that Rand Study now? I'm guessing at least as old as the current Plebes.😀. If USNA and other Service Academies wanted you to know their formula, I'm sure they would let us all know. The unknown keeps Candidates from trying to game the system. The only gouge I have ever heard, through many BGO training sessions, is that the Math SAT/ACT is given more weight than Verbal, primarily because USNA and service in the Navy itself is heavily STEM oriented.

I agree with all of that.

I also think that formula could come out in discovery in upcoming lawsuits. Probably it would be sealed.

And I suspect it should be subject to FOIA.

But who cares, it’s all a waste of time. I am thankful my son didn’t look into USNA until the end of his junior year. His record was his record.

2015. Old. Even if one assumed each SA had a similar method, it is outdated to say the least.

Sometimes the internet gives info that is correlated to things it shouldn’t be.

You know what they say about people assuming things.

That old Rand Study is frequently mentioned on here usually out of context. It was a study about WP and the WCS was mentioned in passing but that seems to be the only thing some focus on. Each year you find a few on here where the get an appointment to one SA but a TWE from another, so clearly the criteria varies somewhat between each SA. The criteria might also have changed in the past 10 yrs or so.

Many older threads talk about class rank (or lack thereof). SA's know how to deal with this and isn't anything an applicant should worry about and obviously has no control over it. Your resume is what it is, and what % of this or that and/or how as SA counts things won't change your eventual outcome.

For the record, I was not referring to the Rand report. I thought it came from USNA.edu but couldn’t find it when I went back.

I did find it in other places, but nothing that would be considered authoritative.

We should have a transparent government?

Just an FYI - my daughters school does not rank but when students apply to service academies they will provide either the actual rank or percentage directly to the academy. They will not disclose it to the student.

Yep. My school is the same. No official ranking, but they will provide percentages, ex top 10, top 15 top 20 etc. to SA and ROTC.

I asked my counselor but they said that they don't even keep track of rank so they won't be answering that question when it is asked by the Service Academies.
