Son is recruited athlete at USMA. Currently a PG at civilian prep school. Did not get nomination, even though he did last year. Are his chances for appointment gone?

Since your son was sponsored by the Association of Graduate - this places him in a special category of applicants. He was offered this because West Point wants him. If he made a good faith effort to secure a nomination, I would not think this would keep him from an appointment.
Do not let him get discouraged. He certainly should be in touch with his admissions officer and he can of course advise officially.
