Just curious, new to this forum.

My son has applied to the Air Force Academy. We haven't received an acceptance yet.

He is completely submitted, has a congressional nomination and also the Child of Disabled Veteran.
SAT scores were a bit low though, 580 in Math and 630 EBRW. Just curious if anyone know what the odds are of getting accepted. Both his mother and I both served also in the Air Force.

He attended the summer seminar also

A lot of the parents are in the same shoes as you. They are waiting for the acceptance email. The bulk of the acceptance will not be out until mid-March. It's just a waiting game.

As for the chance of your DS getting acceptance involve a lot of factors that only USAFA know. Good luck to your son and have plan B in place.

This might help you to see what the class of 2021 was like.

Came for time travel thread. Disappointed.
When folks are waiting for the big fat envelope they can occassionally make typos. I remember this period of time as one of the most frought in my parenting days. Waiting, wondering, hoping..... best of luck to all applicants and their parents.

fldadof5, Thank you for your service and best of luck to your DS! I'm not sure anyone can really tell you his chances as each nomination slate is a competition, but having 2 nominations certainly helps. Assuming your DS is 3Q, it will depend on how he stacks up against the others on his slates. For his MOC nomination, his chances are basically 1 out 10, assuming a full slate. For the Children of Deceased or Disabled Veterans category, there is no limit to nominations, but appointments authorized in this category are limited to 65 cadets at the Academy at one time. So it's pretty difficult to mathematically chance this one since you know neither how many appointments are available this year nor how many qualified nominations there are. I have seen some comments in the past that indicate there's usually a fairly small pool of applicants with this type of nom. If true, it should work in your favor as your family has earned this chance for your son. Again, best of luck!

“For his MOC nomination, his chances are basically 1 out 10, assuming a full slate”

Can you explain why the chance is 1 out 10? I thought the 10 applicants per slate are for all 4 SAs? Thus the actual chance for USAFA should be higher than 10%?

They can nominate 10 for each opening at each academy. Typically one opening per year at the big three so they can nominate 30 candidates in total. The other academies do it differently.

Congressional Nominations
Each Member of Congress is allowed to have a maximum of five cadets attending USAFA at one time. For each cadet vacancy that occurs, the member may nominate up to 10 candidates to be considered for appointment. Vacancies occur when cadets graduate or leave prior to graduation.

So typically the MOC will submit a slate of 10 nominees to be considered for 1 appointment slot. Should it happen to be a year that the MOC has 2 slots, he/she could submit 2 slates, so a total of 20 nominees for 2 openings and still a 1 in 10 chance.

There are lots of threads to read up on the finer workings of the nomination/appointment process, but with 1 MOC nomination on a full slate you begin with a 1 in 10 chance. That why all applicants are encouraged to seek nominations from all sources where they are qualified. More noms, more chances.
