My DS won his congressional slate and has a direct nomination to USMA, but is also applying to USNA. Does this mean that his nomination does not count under USNA because his nom was for USMA?
 
If he received a nomination for USMA, it is only for USMA.
It should be specific in the letter he received from his representative.
Something along the lines of "I am please to notify you that I have nominated you to The United States Military Academy"

He would have to receive another nomination to USNA to be in the running for an Offer of Appointment to USNA.
Sometimes MOCs will have time to change their nomination direction (from USMA to USNA), but that would normally only happen before the slates were finalized and turned in.
 
Usually there are 2 boards for the separate academies. You can have 2 noms for the 2 separate academies, but one does not roll over to both
 
The clue will be in the MOC's nomination letter to your DS. I've seen some letters say "Congratulations! It's my pleasure to nominate you to the Service Academies [plural] of your choice."

That means, the MOC would give a nom for any SA's that your DS told the MOC Board he wanted to apply to, usually as indicated by candidates on the MOC's application for nomination.

Perhaps USMA has different terminology ...but mixing up terms makes this a confusing statement for USNA. First, did Candidate get a nomination . Most nominations are "competitive", with the MOC nominating up to 10 candidates. Then, USNA Noms and Appointments chooses the most competitive from among those 10 candidates and offers the Appointment. "Winning the congressional slate" refers to being awarded the Appointment from among the nominations, not receiving a nomination.

As to the orignal question -- Nominations to each Service Academy are independent of each other. A candidates can get a nomination to multiple Service Academies, although many MOC try to spread the cheer by apportioning them according to the candidate preference.
 
if there are no nominations listed in your DS's USNA candidate portal, then no nominations were received

Yes, the terminology can be quite confusing. Thank you for the clarification. He received the primary nomination from our Congressman to USMA.
