Norwich University '26

Norwich travel recommendation…find a buddy that lives near the Boston or New York area. Hitch a ride with them, get dropped off at airport or subway to airport and use much cheaper ticket from larger airport (even better if bought with credit card points!). My kids have had success with this route and in return buy Southern outdoor themed tshirts and hats as a thank you, which are apparently very popular with their crowd.

The location is the thing my son doesn’t love about Norwich. We are just 3 hours away and that’s great, but the middle of nowhere is less appealing. That being said I got the feeling when we were there that there were organized activities for things to do. In reality my kid is a homebody so he’s more likely to engage in an activity that is planned for him than to go seek out things to do if he were in a less rural environment. Guess we’ll find out!

Years ago was driving my DS to college in Burlington on Rte 89. Was low on gas & saw exit with "Norwich" on the sign. Thought we'd gas-up and drive by Norwich University, as we have time to spare. Got off 89 & drove for 20 minutes, now on fumes, seeing nothing but Vermont trees. Did a 180 & returned tio highway, looking for gas elsewhere. Beautiful, to be sure, but being from eastern Massachusetts I expect a gas station within a hundred feet of getting off the highway. To be honest, getting off the highway to Montpelier (the state CAPITAL!) finds you nothing. Not even a MacDonalds.

Vermont is lovely - just not for this urbanite (or even suburbanite.)

Burlington, VT is a hoot, however. Just went to the RiRa Irish pub there a couple of weeks back.

Agree, I pass 4 gas stations in the 3 miles between my home and the highway in upstate NY. However, the scenery in VT is beautiful and I bet you can see all the stars at night! Just know not to show up hungry or needing gas and you'll manage just fine :)

In fairness, the exit you likely saw for Norwich is for the Town of Norwich and not Norwich University. This can be a bit confusing for people who aren’t familiar with the area as a lot of people assume the college is in the Town of Norwich. The exit for the college is the Northfield exit (the town in which the college is actually located). While Northfield is still pretty small and remote, it is downright bustling compared to the Town of Norwich and the college actually isn’t that far from the exit. But yeah, it can be tough to find a gas station between Randolph, VT and the Montpelier region.
