Hi! My son was just accepted for the class of 2022. Norwich is his first choice and he (and I) are very excited for this adventure! No questions right now. Just waiting to see the financial aid package when it comes!

My DS was accepted to Norwich class of 2022 too, Marine Transportation major. He received his BWE over thanksgiving weekend and his financial aid award arrived by email last week. It was a generous award but is still very pricey. He is also accepted to Maine Maritime but no financial aid from them yet. His first choice is USNA or usna prep.

Congratulations! Forgive me, I am not military and I have no idea what a BWE is! I’m going to be on a huge learning curve! Great on MMA! I’m concerned about the cost as well. But I guess we can figure that out.

BWE= Big white envelope! It’s not military, it a service academy forum acronym. Lol. Norwich sends such a nice acceptance letter and certificate. And their follow up has been impressive too, really makes a kid feel wanted.

My son received his acceptance to Norwich at the beginning of November, and you are absolutely right... they have done a GREAT job making these kids feel wanted!!! I am very impressed.

Agree that the school makes accepted students feel wanted. My DS received his acceptance for class of 2022 as well. After receiving scholarship notification he was very excited. He has a solid resume and GPA. Come to find out, everyone (including those with GPA of 2.0 receive $$). Feeling less wanted and more like anyone is wanted. I had heard that Norwich was a competitive school, but it seems that this is not the case. Are they really looking for quality students?

I don't think you should base the quality of the students on the scholarships. "Norwich University's normal financial aid package for newly arriving first year students is $32,471. About 100.0% of first year students get financial aid, most of which is in the form of scholarships and grants." They are a private institution and have more money to give. I just think it is nice how attentive they are to those who get accepted. Hand written holiday card, congratulations video, letters (and phone calls) from coaches, etc...

My understanding is there are several types of scholarships. Some are awarded on past achievement and are provided all 4 years. Others are dependent on continued GPA. They range from 12000 to 25000 a year, depending on achievement. So I agree, you shouldn’t judge them on the fact he was awarded aid that most get in some form, but maybe instead on what he did achieve for himself, how much HE earned, and how awesome it is that Norwich has the funding to do these sorts of scholarships for the kids!!

    A couple of factors here;
    • Norwich is a private institution and as such is run like a business.
    • Scholarships are in part a recruiting toll that allows the tuition to be more competitive with other schools in the Northeast (there are a lot of schools in the Northeast).
    • As an SMC they can not replace students (in the Corps) who leave with transfers.
    • For the class of 2020 18% did not return for their sophomore year.
    • Many students enroll thinking they will get a campus based ROTC scholarship, then don't and leave due to finances.
So, are they looking for quality students? Yes.
Do they accept students that they "know" won't last? Yes
My impression is it easier to get into than to stay. Some students thrive, some adapt and end up changing to "easier" majors, some leave.
Overall the students in the Corps are highly motivated no matter what level at which they perform academically.

Thanks for this. Makes us feel a little better about Norwich. He was a little disillusioned when he found out that an applicant from across the city was accepted with no leadership roles to his name, no volunteering, no awards, and maybe a 2.0 GPA (and a less than stellar reputation). My DS has a solid resume. No one works harder or has the level of respect from his teachers and peers than he does. The acceptance lost its appeal as you can probably understand. It was a bit of a kick in the gut. It sounds like many schools have broad acceptance policies. Norwich is no different. He does like the school and I hope he decides to attend.

I like the fact that they have called my son a few times after his acceptance package was sent to him plus the hand written Christmas card or was it Holiday card Hmmmm. They called to ask if he had any question on scholarship or financial awards. Or the cross country coach reaching out. Now if only one of them could make it not go below 32 degrees.

I checked the weather report today. I can't believe it's already below freezing and snowing.
