I was accepted in October for the national NROTC scholarship and my ultimate backup(Florida State) just rejected me after i applied a little late for regular decision and i also applied to USNA(No news yet) and UC schools(No news). Obviously for out of state folks UC schools are very hard to get into so im not trying to rely on those. USNA is my #1 choice and i want nothing in the world but that but USNA, although im a principal nominee and i have 'decent' odds.

Are there any colleges that i can still apply to with NROTC so that if the academy rejects me i have something to fall back on "other than enlisting" im in the DEP program with the navy but im able to conditionally get out of it is i get NROTC.

Thank you!

I am sure there are universities that have Navy and a March 1st application deadline or later. Probably not the top schools, but there are some. For instance, Eastern Michigan University is part of U of Michigan NROTC, and the school is rolling admissions, and there is a chance to transfer to UM. KU and Iowa State are also rolling admissions. I am sure there are many more. Key is to gain admission to at least one school that has NROTC just in case USNA doesn't work out.

Check the list of Navy ROTC host schools at https://www.netc.navy.mil/Commands/Naval-Service-Training-Command/NROTC/Navy-ROTC-Schools/#

There are quite a few schools listed that have rolling admissions and/or later application deadlines such as May 1 and later into the summer such as Eastern Michigan University like BJD16 mentioned along with Arizona State and University of New Mexico. You just need to check the schools' websites to see which ones having rolling admissions/late admissions. Good luck!

FSU was tough this year. Their stats required went way up this year. UF is taking more out of state & their stats are too high for most kids, so they're flooding FSU. Lots of DS' classmates are scrambling for round 2 also. I think you can search in common app too ND then cross-reference the NROTC listing. You can also look at Spring entry.

Norwich has a phenomenal NROTC Unit.

Many state schools have rolling admissions policies although you may be behind the eight ball even with them, especially larger schools.

Son applied to Pitt as soon as their application opened and was accepted early fall, we heard anecdotally that they’re trying to shake “safety school” reputation, especially for PA residents. Pitt has an impressive engineering school!

NROTC also seems to be present only at larger schools and not in many places you’d think like URI (Newport & Naval War College is only right across the bay, maybe 15 minutes on a bad day).

The list of colleges with NROTC affiliations isn't that long. If you use the College Search tab in the Common App, you can click on the button for "Application Requirements" and see deadlines for many colleges at a glance.

Florida A&M University has an April 1 deadline for Fall 2024 and shares the FAMU - FSU College of Engineering with Florida State. In fact students at Florida State and Tallahassee CC do Navy ROTC at FAMU.

Off the top of my head, you might check deadlines for New Mexico, Hawaii, Washington State/University of Idaho, Oregon State, University of North Florida, Kansas, Iowa State, and University of Mississippi (Ole Miss).

But note that colleges with Rolling Decision deadlines may admit on a space available basis. Don't wait to apply to those you might want to attend.

DS applied to U of ID for engineering as one of his 5 NROTC schools. No NROTC decision yet but the school accepted him 3 days later. I realize this is about as far away from FL as you can get. They have rolling admissions with no hard deadline.

Ive applied for Jacksonville and Uni of Hawaii Manoa.

Does anyone know how hard it is to change my scholarship from my original 5 to one of those?

Would DS take NROTC Scholarship at U of ID and decline USNA?
Good luck with good choices
👍👍

First choice is USNA, U of ID is plan B, but only with NROTC since it’s out of state and $$ for us. Plan C is in state school and reapply. Since DS plans to pursue nuclear engineering, in state school with NUPOC was also in the mix. Keeping options open in case of illness/injury that would nix plan A.

My DS applied to UH at Manoa . The CO of the unit is super nice , maybe email him and ask ? We are still awaiting if he got the scholarship .

Great step! Additionally, (though you shouldn't rely on this as a main plan), every year there are a select few freshman that transfer schools for their last 3 years of ROTC.

Regardless, applying to Jacksonville and Uni of Hawaii Manoa are great steps! If you can financially afford it, I'd apply for a third school also. Can never hurt to have another backup.

Proactively contact the UC schools NROTC detachments. They have sway... at least they claimed to a few years ago.

I thought NROTC app deadline was 1/31. From reading this thread it sounds like you are saying the NROTC deadline coincides with the individual schools app deadline.

I was recently on a webinar with the PNS at SUNY Maritime and their deadline is more than a month out at this point.

I applied to SUNY Maritime, Uni of Hawaii at Manoa, and Jacksonville Uni and ill major in Mech E, and obviously do all the NROTC freshman year requirements

My overall plan is to reapply to USNA next year if im TWE'd this year, will any of those(Assuming im accepted to all) help with my odds of gaining an appointment. To rephrase are any of those known for being 'harder' or more profound than the others.

I don’t think it really matters about the “hardness” of an NROTC unit. NROTC is NROTC. Units change from time to time as staff rotate out

Go to whichever school you like better and don’t worry about how prestigious their NROTC unit is. If you really love the school and have more motivation at it, then you’ll perform much better freshman year than if you just chose that school because you think their unit is prestigious
