What is the correct process to decline a NROTC scholarship if DS has accepted his appointment? After I-Day with a letter to The NROTC command? Before I-Day to allow notification of those on a wait list?
What is everyone else in the same position doing?

Our son mailed his notice to decline the scholarship on May 1st, so his spot could be used when they started to work the wait list. He used the form NSTC 1533/140 that came with his scholarship packet. He specified on the form that he was declining the scholarship due to appointment to USNA. He received an email from Pensacola shortly after saying they had received his declination and good luck at the Academy!
I have to say it was a little bit wrenching to give up that scholarship he'd worked so hard for, instead of keeping it as a "backup" until I-Day, but he really felt like it was the right thing to do. He does still have his admission to his backup University, which we'll send his decline letter to after he's safely at USNA. :thumb:

We had an interesting thing happen today. Son had notified VMI before May 1st that he wasn't coming, received a refund and also told the ROTC at the school. We had not completed the form mentioned above. Well...tomorrow is the Senior Awards Ceremony and the head of Guidance called me today to clarify something. She said that there were two commanding officers in the office, both prepared to present him with a scholarship on Friday(USNA and NROTC). Yikes! They called him down and he verbally declined the NROTC and we sent an email to Pensacola. He has been corresponding via email there on some other issues. He will have to look at the form to see if he should in fact send it out as well. Later in the afternoon he received a phone call from the NROTC office confirming his decline of the scholarship. They were very nice and said that they understood the whole back-up plan but it was a bit awkward!

Thanks for the info. We'll use the form in his packet as you suggested. His awards ceremony is Tuesday. I guess we better send it in ASAP so we don't have two Navy reps armwrestling.
