I was awarded the NROTC scholarship as well as multiple financial aid awards. When combining these awards, I believe I would have some money left over (assuming the NROTC scholarship amount is specifically 200k as stated on the certificate). Would the rest of the unused scholarship money be returned to the Navy or would it be given to me for personal use? Thanks

There will be NO NROTC money leftover, you will NOT receive any money back, from NROTC, above the monthly stipend. That gets taken first. For your other scholarships, you need to specifically check with your school finance dept.

also the other financial aid awards...verify they can be used for room and board. Some may be tuition only which would make you want to consider using the NROTC $ for room and board.

Do your research at primary sources. I am not sure NROTC scholarships can be used for room and board. Some schools do offer room and board to ROTC students; check with the school.

Definitely contact the university also (as stated in the link above). My son was awarded 3 year AROTC at the Citadel and they are not only covering R&B for 4 years, but the additional year of tuition. He is ending up at TAMU with the 4 year NROTC and they have a new scholarship that covers R&B.

Hi, I noticed your DD is attending Penn State. NROTC and AF ROTC may operate a bit differently but do you have any insight into the ROTC program at Penn State or just the school in general in terms of pros and cons as well as firsthand experience? Thank you.

I thought Capt Meyers said they could be used for one or the other. I could be wrong.

I found a couple of NROTC unit FAQ sites that said no, but don’t have time this AM to go hunt down the hq NETC or NROTC info. The unit sites, while official, may or may not be up to date.

Our OP can always call their intended unit or contact primary sources.

That Meyers guy keeps causing trouble.

So in fact, a Midshipmen can use the NROTC scholarship for either tuition and some fees, or room and board, but not both. Some universities offer a break on the room and board for contracted Midshipman.

What I highly recommend is that DS or DD pulls together all of the various awards or scholarships they have received. Then contact the university and ask to meet with or speak with the military affairs or the veteran's affairs liaison. Just about every university I know has one. They can help determine which financial aid and scholarships can be applied to the various college fees.

As a general rule, all other scholarships should be applied to the tuition bill first. Then the university will send an invoice to the unit, and the Supply Technician will review that bill for accuracy. Then it is submitted for processing up to NSTC. But what this means is essentially the government is the "last to pay". What it also means is we don't send checks to Mids for thousands of dollars for leftover tuition.

These are general rules, and I know there are differing rules for different universities. No one should take statements listed here as definitive and base financial decisions on that.

At GWU for example, any Midshipmen who are Tier 1 majors get a break on room and board. And this includes College Programmers not on scholarship. We just send a list of student names over to the university so they know who they are. But not every place does that.

I meant to add, but I can't figure out how to edit, but I confirmed the Room and Board option with the Deputy Director for NROTC at NSTC. There are a lot of websites lagging behind, and I am not sure why. But the room and board is capped at 11K, so people need to think carefully about that before they make their option known.

But as CAPT MJ notes, contact the NROTC unit in question. They should definitely know the answer.

I tried private messaging you but I don't think you have 5 messages yet? I did post a message on your profile for you.

Thank you, I appreciate it.
