Does anyone have reliable intel about the timing of a NROTC Nomination to USNA? The deadline for submissions is 31 Jan., but how early should an app be submitted to have a chance? In other words, NROTC apps have a winter deadline, but it's in your best interest to submit early (Aug) to make the first board. Do the NROTC Nomination to USNA apps work the same way?

NROTC nominations are submitted separately from the USNA application. NROTC MIDN submit the request to their unit...it says military instructor/professor or headmaster...but the CO is probably the one who is actually going to make the decision on who gets the nomination(s) (each unit can only submit up to 3 MIDN per year). Theoretically, it is possible for every NROTC unit to submit 3 names...however, the catch is only 20 appointments can be charged to this nominating source (which also includes NJROTC units, too). This is NOT a reliable nomination and is really non-competitive since most units do not have 4+ MIDN applying to USNA (therefore, it isn't hard to obtain). As for the timing, these appointment "charges" are not likely to be decided until after January 31...however, you never know...there is no harm in getting the paperwork in early. See: https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/Steps-for-Admission/Nomination-Sources/NROTC-Units.php

DS is in the middle of this process too. I agree with usnabgo08 (of course), but would add two caveats. The NROTC nomination also requires a letter of recommendation from the CO. Hopefully, this recommendation carries a little weight. After all, in my DS' case, it's written by an active duty Navy Captain and USNA graduate experienced in evaluating Midshipmen, albeit in NROTC. Also, it seems like the charging of nominations can turn into a game of musical chairs. While you only need one nomination, at the margin I think it helps to be in multiple 'games', e.g., MOC, NROTC, & Presidential.

Thank you for your replies.
DS received the nomination from his CO.
