NROTC scholarship but not yet accepted to MIT

I have a question that I hope someone can answer.
My DD friend's best friend was awarded the NROTC scholarship to MIT. She hasn't yet been accepted to that school. Now that she has a full scholarship, does MIT automatically accept her? Are her chances for acceptance increased or is it not taken into consideration?

NROTC acceptance and college acceptance are 2 different things. It seems (from other posts on this forum) that some colleges will take a NROTC scholarship into consideration for admission but other colleges don't.

When we visited NU last year, 19 kids had been awarded NROTC scholarships but only 3 got accepted.

Since it may or may not help, I don't think it hurts to inform the admissions department and contact somebody at the school involved in Navy ROTC. When my son won his scholarship for the Army, that's what he did. The admissions department said that they don't consider scholarships, but he was accepted a week later. It can't hurt and might help.

They'll know something for sure tomorrow, 3/14 (or PI day) at 6:28 p.m.

Every school is different in how Admissions interacts with the ROTC cadre.

Suggest your DD's friend's friend telephone and email the cadre at MIT, and ask if they can assist you with admissions. It can't hurt, and may help considerably.

I have a pal who went to Notre Dame 20 years ago and was told explicitly he was accepted because of the ROTC scholarship. What school would not want full tuition without the hassle of trying to collect or manage financial aid.

NROTC scholarship but.....

Back in 2007, my son earned a scholarship for NROTC. He also applied to MIT and was never accepted. He eventually attended Penn State and turned the scholarship down. He was under the impression, because Penn State was what he thought was a state school and it would be cheaper. Boy was he wrong. His mother now has a debt load for him at $100,000. So to that end, if your DD wants to attend MIT. call the admissions office. The sooner the better.

Best of Luck,

Ouch! I suspect that scholarship would have been transferable to Penn State, too. Good information - thank you!

USAFA83GradWife,

You are correct it was transferable. He decided not to. Keep us posted. I would be interested how you guys make out.

Best of luck,
