NROTC Scholarship Offer

So I got off a call with my nrotc coordinator and the conversation basically went like this. The NTAG CO for my area is offering me a NROTC scholarship opportunity right now, however, it would require me to change my major. I currently have it set as a tier 3 major, and the requirements are to move towards a tier 1 or 2. I've already been designated an alt for the scholarship, and even though I believe I have a competitive application, I am still just very nervous I won't win anything because of the tier 3. Should I take the offer? I've looked through the list and all the majors for tier 1 or tier 2 either don't interest me or make me nervous about studying them. However, my paranoia about the scholarship is making me consider taking the safer option.

They may have already maxed out with people having Tier 3 majors on scholarship. What major do you want? What Tier 2 is similar?

I’d take the offer and run. Once you’re in the system, it’s easier to change majors. My DD was told by a unit CO to put a Tier 1 major on her application to be more competitive. Once established, going down a level is signed off by the CO.

Can you pay for the first year on your own? If so you can stay with your tier 3 but will likely not select this time up. We have had an abundance of tier 3 people this year and this is why people are being told they are alternates. You likely would have made it if you were tier 1 or 2. But that choice is totally up to you.

Since the Navy requires two semesters of Calculus and Physics, there are some majors below that are not that hard if you can complete those four courses. If you are trying to avoid engineering, I recommend majoring in Statistics or Mathematics. At most universities, Statistics is in the school of business. You can still get a minor or double major in Econ. Or as Newport122 mentioned, try to change tiers while in college.

I was a Business major, so that is why I went Army ROTC.

I thought it was difficult to change from tier 1 to tier 3 once you’re in?
The CO told my DD that a change from Tier 1 to Tier 2 is doable and can be changed at the command level; Tier 1 to 3 is questionable and has to go through Big Navy. In the case of @Korse - I would advise my DD to opt for one of the Tier 2s and make it work.
