Does anyone know if we can get the newborn sickle cell test drawn now? My DS did not have this test performed as a newborn and has had no signs of sickle cell disease throughout his life.

A few years ago, we had this done for my DS who was entering his NROTC unit as a College Programmer. It wasn’t for NSI, but rather for the paperwork required by his school’s unit. Wonder if anyone has done this for NSI? We’ll have to do the same thing for DS #2 if he accepts his NROTC scholarship. His prospective school sent directions on how to fill out the NSI paperwork & I feel like he just had to submit a valid test (I just browsed the paperwork).

If I'm remembering correctly, my son didn't need the sickle cell test for NSI, but he did need one before CORTRAMID so that he could participate in the aviation portion of the program.

DS got his new born test result from Dept of Health of the state where he was born. However, our doctor ordered his new Sickle Cell test during our visit last week saying "it is better to have current test result". We will have it included in the package.

My son had a sickle cell test performed last spring in preparation for NSI - his test from when he was an infant did not specifically state that he was negative, just that it was performed and was not sufficient.

We were sent a list of acceptable tests. We just did this for my son’s NSI package (which was accepted and he now has his NSI dates).

He had blood drawn and we had results within a week. You should have the examples of the tests they will accept in lieu of the newborn screening in the NSI paperwork package that was emailed to him. I have the copies if you need them.

Definitely required for NSI this year. We just went through that process.

I got the test done last winter when he went in for his DODMERB physical. I think I spend around $45 that was non-reimbursable. It was easier and worth it to me as it was getting to be painful trying to get it from the hospital where he was born.

If you have those copies, that would be great!

These are the samples that were sent to us in the NSI package. Hope it helps!

The NSI paperwork we got last year left zero doubt in my mind that the test was required for NSI attendance.

My DD just had her sickle cell test done and apparently a full blood panel along with it. So the report shows a low RDW but no sickle cell. She’s already been through DODMERB with no issues. Is this going to be a problem?
