Anyone with experience having their NROTC scholarship applied toward summer course work? Our 4/C is thinking about taking an elective (not required for NROTC scholarship) course through the online division of his home campus. We are wondering if that tuition "MIGHT" be covered as part of his scholarship, and if so, how we would go about getting that approval in place.

Any experience - pro or con would be appreciated.

I only have experience with DS taking a summer online class through his current school - NROTC paid for that (all but the fees). He would have preferred an in person class (Calc II) at our local community college but his current school gave him a hassle about enrolling for a Fall class which required Calc II w/o having it completed & the grade submitted (if he took it at the CC). I’m not sure if NROTC would have paid for the class at the CC because he goes there for free since I’m an employee of the CC. Hopefully your child can take it at a CC just in case it’s not covered. So much more reasonable price wise!

Thank you, great to hear it might be possible! Was there anything special your DS did to arrange for NROTC to pay?

I’m not sure - I kind of stayed out of it. But, I’m talking to him Sunday night & can see if he has any suggestions then. I think he just worked with his unit to get it covered….

My son's experience with summer class reimbursement is that approval was given if the course was required for the degree and that taking during the summer was required for scheduling (i.e. not able to take the next fall, needed as a prereq for a class, etc.)

I concur that this was also the case for my ROTC unit. as long as it was required for the degree, it would be covered.

Some students took Calc/Physics during the summer in order to lessen the burden on themselves during the schoolyear. In this case, because they just wanted to make it "easier" on themselves by not taking it during the school year and not a legit scheduling issue, they had to to pay for it themselves.

But, if it was course XYZ that was required for major, didn't fit in schedule during the school year (for example some engineering degrees that would've taken 5 yrs but could be done in 4 if classes are taken in the summer), ROTC paid for it.

Also, if I recall correctly, required calculus and physics classes had to be taken at your assigned university. I think you could get approval to take them at another NROTC host university, but not a community college or university that does not have an NROTC unit.

I have seen the same. Only colleges that have a NROTC unit can be used for Calc and Physics.

💯 agree but they can request an exception from their leadership. My DS was granted an exception so he could take it at our CC. He ended up taking it online thru his University but he was given the green light to go to the CC.

There are exceptions to every rule, but there is never a guarantee that you will get that exception. Every situation is different.

💯 agree 😊 - that’s why my post said “exception”. I was very careful not to say it was a “guarantee”. Just providing our experience since that’s what OP asked for….

You are right and I agree completely. I just see some people on this forum see these exceptions to rule posts and then forget about the exception part. Then come back later confused why they didn't get what they wanted. We all sometimes read things we want to happen and then forget the parts that hinder that want. I just like to reiterate when something is a exception to remind readers that it is always "needs of the Navy" when making a request. It's great that you posted about the exception as all they can do is say no. 👍
