This past July DS received 3 year “sideload” NROTC scholarship. To date the university hasn’t received any tuition money for my DS and DS hasn’t received any monthly stipend or book money. Is anyone in a similar situation or does anyone know if this is unusual? I figured I would ask on this forum, DS is resisting bothering his Lt. with this question so far. Thanks

Congrats to your DS on picking up a sideload scholarship. He was awarded one, and now that scholarship needs to be activated. Likely to activate he'll have needed to pass the physical test on day 1 this semester and then his university has to activate it with signing off/ processing the p/w.

Once activated the tuition will be paid, until activated it will not. We've seen in years past activating take some weeks but then book/ bi-monthly stipends are retro-paid and the semester tuition, fees are paid as well. No, this is not unusual/ unprecedented but your DS should take the lead to confirm all is OK.

I would recommend you or your DS confirming with your bursar's office at his university that you are OK while this is processed. And I do think your DS should take the lead to ask his chain of command what the timeline/ process is for the scholarship to be activated.

Hope that helps / good luck.

Thank you very much for the info! There is a Covid situation however, they are doing NROTC remotely so no physical training or testing is taking place. I will have him reach out to his chain of command. Thx!

Its possible the tuition and books will be paid in October, new fiscal year. That is when my sons gets paid every year (and I can confirm it was paid on Friday). As far as stipend, he should ask, my son has been receiving since school started. Its possible the LT responsible for the paperwork is new and there was a delay, I've seen LTs move in and out of the unit every couple of years.

I was thinking too that OP you should just confirm with your child that there is no issue you haven't been made aware of that would impact the activation of a scholarship. It turns out that one of my son's roommates "picked up" over the summer but failed the fitness assessment and now is on thin-ice/ may lose the scholarship and I don't believe his parents yet know - he's hoping to turn it around but may or may not. Anyway, just make sure it's not a specific issue vs a general delay. Likely no worries but worth a check.

My DD is now a senior and for the past 3 years her tuition and fees for the fall semester aren't paid until December/January and the spring semester usually is paid in April or May.

Yeah, he'll need to pass the PFT to activate the scholarship. I don't think the stipend will be paid in arrears so he should figure out, with his cadre, how he can pass the PFT. Of course it's covid time so perhaps things are different, but in any case it needs to work it through his cadre.
