NSI Cycle 2

How exciting for you. I loved hearing form other NSI parents about the MRE's for lunch, etc...

No letter from my DS.... at least not yet. His flight to NSI was cancelled and he did not get there until late on Sat. I'm guessing that may be why... we will see.

Wow, we didnt get those details. Just that they cut his hair more even though he followed the guidelines and cut his hair that he had been growing for 5 years. Also, they were doing a lot of standing. And this closing remark, "well let me go, Chief just came in cussing." ROFL

I got a letter! He also included one for the Marine Recruiters. It was funny- he got there late, and they ran out of supplies. For example, everyone else has canteens, my son has a plastic water bottle. No big deal- but interesting insight.

He also said the only thing he got to keep were his underwear, and his socks that he had on. That made me laugh- he wears fun printed underwear and socks! (Not very standard!)

Got my second letter today from DS. It was dated 5 Jul. He did not seem to be in quite as good of spirits as he was in the first. Of course, some of that probably had to do with the fact that his 18th bday was July 4th and he was stuck in ROM at NSI. He said that out of his compartment of 80 candidates they are down to 72 due to 8 (10%) DORs. Hopefully, things are better now that they are out of ROM and the training has started. Only 10 days to go!

On another subject, does anyone know why they didn’t post the video of the swearing-in ceremony from yesterday. They sent out notification in advance that Sunday’s ceremony would not be live streamed but that it would be posted to their (NROTC) Facebook account today. I saw a couple of comments that the commanding officer did not authorize posting the video. They posted it for session one, just curious why they would decide not to post session II? Any thoughts?

Received 3 letters so far. One at day two (not in good spirits). One dated at day 6 (June 30 - much better). Last one dated day 10 (July 5 - “I got this” ). Much said. Plenty of DOR’s. Not finding the training too hard but said some kids struggling physically. Some passed out during PT.

Said the standing and yelling is getting old and can’t wait until ROM is over. He had to do a 4hr standing night watch with his POD on July 4th which he was not pleased about. Food is good.

RE the video - no idea why not posted but I could speculate.

So strange reading the letter from day 10 that I got today and they are on day 17! Hope everyone is hanging in there. This is way harder for me than I expected.

I feel the same way! It has been hard. DS said he didn’t want to sound like he was just complaining and that he actually was enjoying the training. He is tired of the yelling which he said literally started at 0600 and did not stop until 2000…lmao. He seems much more appreciative of home life and what his mom and I have done for him. Bad thing is, he’ll be home for just over a week and then have to report to his NROTC unit for NSO. That should be a breeze for him after this!

We got multiple letters today. He said they had skipped the mail run for a few days. Now that ROM is over things should be much better. Definitely realizing things he takes for granted.

We are also disappointed that there is no video. Lots of friends and family members were looking forward to hearing the welcome to NSI. I really hope they post the graduation!

My DD is so happy that ROM is over but I am pretty sure that she's one of the ones having a hard time with the PT. She's not out of shape. She actually works out 5-6x per week. Her biggest struggle is that she's not a runner. When she went for the PFT she came in dead last but thankfully still met the qualifying time. Most of the people that she's met has participated in some super-cardio heavy sport like soccer or ran cross-country. She was a coxswain, so unfortunately during the season was her least active time. Seems weird to be "in-season" but end up less active. Anyhoo - she seems to have the right attitude. She said that she may come in last but she'll finish.

I hadn't heard of people dropping. She didn't mention anything about it. Maybe she's just unaware. I hope the rest of the mids hang tough and finish it out. They are so close to graduating!

Glad they posted more pics today. Love that they actually started some “training”. Looks like they were getting introduced to fire fighting. I know my guy will be pumped for the change of pace. Still no visual of him.

As for the DOR’s they only may be aware of their POD. My DS said “guys already DOR’d” and that was day 6. No more detail than that though So he had 80 in his pod. Could be 2 or 6 or 10. Also could just be his pod. Who knows.

Now to figure out how to embarrass him at the airport. Hmmm.

My son has a problem with the running as well. He is a year round baseball player and recruited athlete but they do not train for endurance. It is strictly power and explosiveness. If they were just running 60 yard sprints he would be all over it…lol. He has been working on the distance but it is certainly a struggle. The cross-country and soccer guys have it much easier.

I wonder if our sons are in the same pod? He had 80 in his as well and by day 11 it was down to 72. To embarrass my son I ordered all my family the yellow, Navy PT shirts. Found a site to buy them for $4.98/ea so we will all be wearing those. I also plan on saluting him and holding it until he returns my salute. He’ll want nothing to do with his dad doing that.

Glad someone else said it about the airport. I am excited. He may be in my sons Pod. He also mentioned 80 in their Pod.
