Does anyone know any details about the NSI graduation ceremony, held on the final day of each NSI session? I would like to try to attend if we can and just wondering if others have gone or what the day is like? I assume we find a hotel somewhere near the base, given the early arrival time; any recommendations? I would like at least one of us to attend the ceremony but we will have to see what travel logistics look like I suppose.

My son is attending NSI session 2.

Thank you!

Following. I asked Ole Miss if family could go and he was going to check.

Here is a older pdf about NSI graduation I found. This year might be a little different, but it gives some information that will not be much different.

Here is a ceremony last year-
I've looked into going to NSI graduation also. We would have to fly in order to do it. The ceremony lasts less than a hour. It looks like you do get to see your MIDN right after for a few minutes, but they then have to get back to finish, pack, and get to transportation home. Its is alot of logistics and moving parts to see your MIDN march for 5 minutes and maybe talk with them for 10 minutes or so.

Since its available online live, that might be a better option unless its just a excuse to visit Chicago. Then it might be worth while.

There is a form he got when he was assigned a session that he can fill out and bring with him to NSI. I have the details about how many can go (4 max) and when it is (8:45am) and ends (10am) but that's about it. I did a quick check for hotels and I didn't see any. Hoping someone else has been or has more info about the event... and if this is something families usually go to? I'm not even sure of that.

Maybe this will help.

It clearly depends on your schedule, your resources, and whether it is important to your kid. We did go, as I knew it was important for our son. It is true that the ceremony is about an hour, and you get probably 20 minutes with your child before they ship them all off to the airport by bus. I can tell you that the look on my son's face was worth it. Probably the look on our faces as well; We couldn't have been prouder. He was also scheduled for a very late night flight and would have been sitting in the airport for about seven hours. We drove to the airport and picked him up for lunch. Then we went back to where we were staying. He must have stayed in the shower for at least a half hour which was followed by four hours of sleep. It did take a lot of time and some resources, but for us it was well worth the trip and I know he will have that cherished memory of us there. :)

I don't know if the Navy does this for NSI, but in lieu of a plane ticket (can't cost the government more than what the plane ticket would cost), sometimes you can claim mileage. Chicago flights are pretty cheap so I wouldn't expect much but you could ask the unit if it's possible. Others on the forum may know the answer to this already.

We are planning to fly in Sun then go to a Cubs game. Go to graduation on Monday and plan to be on the same flight back to Texas.

We plan on going - session 2. We have not figured out all of the details yet but hope to make it there to show our support (also to catch a glimpse of Chicago since I have never been :) !). Like the idea of catching a Cubs game.

Anyone have any recommendations on "safe" areas to stay when attending NSI graduation. With all the news on Chicago crime, and having never been there before just looking for safe places to throw in the Marriott website. Thanks in advance!!

I just looked and there are a few good hotels like 4 miles away. It looks like the location is 40 miles away from Midway Airport in northern suburbs. You won’t be near the chaos. I grew up in the southern suburbs. Hopefully the Dets will provide travel info a few weeks ahead. We want to be in the same flight home as DS.

I would research the hotels closely. We are in No. IL & to be honest, that area is not the greatest crime-wise. Yes, it’s not in Chicago proper but this area is definitely not the “North Shore” (despite the proximity to the lake). Gurnee comes to mind as a good possibility - the main area by Six Flags. Good luck 🍀 - have fun!

Thanks. Any thoughts on Waukegan/Gurnee?

If I had to choose I would go w/ Gurnee. With Six Flags being there I feel like there a lot of options for food/hotel, in one area. Probably a little more traffic due to Six Flags but I feel like that area caters to the tourists more (there is even one of those indoor water park hotels there).

What's NSI like? I'm on the 3rd session this summer, and I'm curious as to what all happens since I don't know too much about it. What's the training like? Is access to my phone even a thing? How can I best prepare for it? Thanks.

There are some Youtube videos out there, but just go in as good of shape as you can be and you will be good. Most of it is mental. No access to your phone during NSI. You get one call to parents 1st day to let them know you arrived.

There are several threads on it here if you use the search function. There are also YouTube videos that will give you a general idea. I do not believe you have access to your cell phone. Prepare by being in good shape and ready to learn. Do not be afraid to make mistakes; you will. That is part of the process. Don't take any yelling or correction personally. It is part of the process. Have a thick skin. Keep in mind that this is training for the midshipman instructors as well. They are learning to be leaders and will not be perfect either. Try not to overprepare or learn about everything that will happen there. Embracing the unknown and going into an uncomfortable situation is part of the training process.

I don't think I would call it training. It's a weed-out course. Just get in good shape and enjoy life. You're going to spend a lot of time looking at a wall and wishing you were home.

Contact your school. Ask for a sponsor with recent NSI experience. You'll get more from that than the entire internet can provide.
