So my DS shared the NSI packing list with me. I got a little chuckle as it says "2" pair of underwear. NSI is I think 17 days. I assume they are not issuing underwear but what do I know. Maybe they are. I also can't imagine they are sending out one pair of underwear to the laundry everyday. Seems like the barracks could get pretty ripe. Perhaps someone who has experience sending their kid to NSI or attending themselves can enlighten me about the mystery of the underwear count........

They are issued branch appropriate workout gear (including running shoes), dress uniform (white hat to black shoes) and utility uniforms, a pair of boots, socks and underwear, and seabag to bring it all back home in. They bought their toiletries there - At least that is what happened a few years ago.

I went last summer. Didn't touch the supplies I brought, because everything I needed was issued. Last year was 4 weeks though, so it could be different.

DM me for any questions about nrotc or NSI. Loving it right now

I was also wondering for DD, 2 sports bras on the packing list, so they issue those as well I wonder?

Also I keep hearing about compression shorts. Can anyone DM me a link, Amazon or otherwise as to what to get for these for a female. I don't even know what they are and Google is not helping!. Thank you!

We told our DS to get ready for whitey tighties! (I'm not sure that's actually the case, but it was funny! :D)

I can't remember if they allow it, but either Johnson's baby powder or something like Desinex antifungal foot spray can be a God-send if folks are not accustomed to a lot of running in the heat.

We're live near Houston, Tx. My son looked up the average temps in Great Lakes and was so excited...is mid-80s fairly accurate?

They're just spandex shorts, but only listed for males on the packing list. Ironically my DD was concerned that they are not on the list for females as she prefers to wear them under/instead of running shorts. Welcome to the Navy, kid-you won't be dressing yourself for awhile ;)

Went last summer, never touched anything I brought. Feel free to direct message if you have any other questions!

This question may be silly, but honestly I don't know the answer (for females). What is "proper civilian attire"??? For males I assume khakis and a collared shirt. Same for girls? Any insights?

Is NSI different for Service Academy students vs ROTC students?
Great information here.. as I was also wondering about only 2 days of underwear 😆

They are two totally different programs. NSI is 17 days and USNA plebe summer is about 7 weeks, I believe. My DS entered NROTC before NSI existed, so my knowledge of both programs has been from what I have read over the past several years. Plebe Summer seems to be a much more intense program, both physically and mentally. NSI was designed to standardize the basic Navy knowledge and skills before students reported out to their various universities.

Thank you. Although this is a service academy forum.. most questions in this thread seem to be geared to NSI.. which is what I need 😊
