Obviously, this is the naval service, and MIDN should be able to swim, but during NSI, how much time or stress is placed on being able to swim. Do you have to pass a swim test? If so, is it like different stroke combinations, an endurance test, a mix of both? I have a buddy who went to RTC Great Lakes for bootcamp, and failed the swim qual and had to do daily remediation to get up to speed, is this also the case for NSI? Thanks for any insight!

The candidates are tested on their ability to jump from a diving platform and float (I think for 5 minutes).

Once at their unit they will be tested for 1st Class Swim Qual but the unit will work with them to get that done.

I do not know of anyone being dropped for this unless they have such a fear of heights or the water that they DOR.

It is the very basic 3rd class swim test as GWU PNS described. Jump, swim alittle, and then float for a few minutes. Doesn't matter how you swim or float really. You also have to get into a lifeboat from the water. Very basic and doable.

As for the other class swim quals that you will do in the fleet/at ROTC... ROTC knows not everyone is a gifted swimmer. It'll all work out fine, they work with you. Even in flight school, graduated from college-ensigns had rough times swimming.... with some extra help EVERYONE made it through!

Back in 2019, NSI participants had to learn a basic water ballet sequence and perform that in the Great Lakes Pool to music from the Waltz of the Flowers from the Nutcracker. They were allowed to stand on the bottom - it wasn't hard to learn.

Shown below. Or, wait - maybe that was the Movie Caddyshack.... I can't remember... 1708614083077.png

And today they are required to do it with their hands in their pockets.😏
