NSI TRAVEL HELP

My son is also going to NSI 2 and has not received any travel info yet.
Has he reached out to his unit? I would think that he would have heard something by Saturday, or maybe today. NSI 2 starts in just a couple of days.

@osurocks3 and @Ihavenoidea . It is not uncommon for future midshipmen/ then midshipmen to receive travel orders for NSI or summer cruises very close to their departure. It is coordinated from each hosting unit. My son, now an Ensign, received orders for NSI, summer cruises sometimes on a Thursday to depart Saturday. Be ready, be flexible. Also, sometimes plans change. Son's buddy arrived in CT for a sub cruise, flew back home the next day, then returned to join a different sub the following weekend. Semper gumby- every flexible. Opinions stating he "should have" or something like that for getting travel orders earlier are perhaps from people who haven't been through this, or are from schools from which orders come out more proactively. Hang in there, get mentally ready, and good luck to your son and family as he gets his training underway.

So regardless if you are under review or DQ
Do you still attend NSI?
The post above from @GWU PNS kindly advises any person scheduled to go to NSI who have received a DQ to let the unit know of (their) DQ and verify that (they) should still head to NSI. It was not stated that regardless of being DQ'd or under review (not yet cleared/approved) that a midshipman should head to NSI- anyone in that circumstance should confirm their status with their unit. Note, not the parents but the future mids themselves should interface with the unit). Hope that resharing of those details helps.

I said he should have heard something; not he should have received his travel orders by now. There is a difference. Different units getting the process done at different times is why my first sentence asks if the unit as been contacted. Which is why I made that comment rather then saying how other MIDN's have gotten there travel orders from other units.

My DS is at NSI (cycle 1). One piece of advise to parents of cycle 2 and 3. When they reach the USO at terminal 2, they get to make a short phone call. If you want to record it for your memories, it will happen very fast and you need to set up the recording beforehand. We didn't realize this, and sort of feel bad about it, so putting this on here.

To the OP, my DS got his tickets and orders only a week or so before he left if I recall correctly. But if you are worried, you can reach out to his NROTC unit.
Thank you for the info

DS headed to UT Austin this fall. He is currently in NSI 2, so quick question. He left Austin due to college orientation to Chicago Ohare, His departing flight leaves out of Midway on the same flight as my wife and I back to California as we arranged this with his unit and I have read that he has to take the bus back to airport. Anyone know if he will be able to leave with us after being released or does he have to go to Ohare first on the bus even though he is flying out of Midway? Thanks in advance.

If he coordinates this with the staff I cannot imagine it being an issue but he has to coordinate. This is not the first time they've dealt with this. The key is it doesn't matter if he's flying home or paddling home, he is being picked up for return home by family members. IF NSI has a bus for others flying out of Midway they may make him take that bus and you meet him at Midway.

From the website:

Upon completion of graduation, those Midshipmen Candidates that will be flying home will be immediately taken to Chicago O'Hare International Airport via buses.
  • Outbound flights should not be booked any earlier than 1400 (2 PM).
  • Midshipmen Candidates that were initially dropped off by family members and friends will be bussed to the Great Lakes Burkey Mall Navy Exchange located at 3452 Green Bay Road, Great Lakes, IL, 60088-2545 for pickup. This building is located off base.
  • Expect Midshipmen Candidates to be ready for pick-up beginning at 1100 (11 AM).
  • Midshipmen Candidates will be required to check-out with NSI Staff prior to departure.

My LHD is at NSI2 right now! We’re an east coast family and will be going to Texas 8/12 for move in on 8/14 and she’ll go to NSO. Maybe we all (parents) can meet up!?

DS is at NSI2 now and my daughter and I are heading out next Sunday to graduation. We are all on the same flight home but have assumed we will meet him at the gate, and not be able to leave with him after graduation, as we didn’t drop him off. That’s our read of the instructions anyway.

Take cell phone to NSI? Yes, no, or doesn't matter? I can't find any official guidance. On the one hand I guess there is probably no possibility to ever use it. On the other hand my son can't imagine even the flight without it, and I would guess they might have a place where they lock them up upon arrival.

Bring it. It will be placed in a box with other belongings at NSI until the end. Also recommended so he will have easy contact at the airports if something happens.

Our DS was at week 1. We had planned to attend graduation and pick him up there and he informed his ROTC unit as such. However, if you fly into O'hare and take the shuttle to Great Lakes, you gotta take the shuttle back after graduation. (he found this out a couple of days prior to graduation but couldn't text us until right before the ceremony). The shuttle actually beat us there by about 10 minutes and it wasn't too terribly difficult to rendezvous at the Arrival area. My bet would be that your DS will have to do the same...but I could be wrong...it IS the Navy after all 😜
