My DS will be attending Nuke Power School. He just got his orders and has to check-in by a certain date and report a few days later. We are helping him move into his (first) apartment and driving the Uhaul while he drives his car down. Question: is check-in just that? Just reporting in so they know you are at your duty station Or is it an all day thing? His check-in is no later than 0730 on a Friday with his report date the middle of the next week.

Source: Been through nuke school both enlisted and as an officer.

Be prepared for check-in to be most of the day. Stepping back, orders typically have report no earlier than and no later than dates. His orders may also specify when he officially starts classes and the real fun begins, which I'm guessing is the middle of that next week date per your comment. Urinalysis and copious admin will occupy a good chunk of his time on check-in. He'll probably have PSD, SAPR, MWR, and Tricare briefs to name a few things. Assuming you'll have part of that day is a mistake, but if it goes smoothly and you get extra time -- great!

Congratulations! Our son and fellow classmates checked in 11 July and officially started 13 July....the check-in process gets started on that day but several "check-in/processing type" things ensue in the days following as well. The check-in day is Mainly for purposes of orders getting "stamped" this all helps them process pay appropriately based on leave status/travel status, etc. and starts the official timeline....they will be given various pockets of time to go get personal things in order, etc.
