O-2 Assignment

What is the typical assignment for an O-2 in the Coast Guard? What are the options? Is it better to be in charge of a small cutter or be a junior officer on a larger boat? This posting is a question from another thread where it was said the CG is different (has more stringent) criteria from other services on promoting to O-3. If you had to do it over again, what would you do different.

Where you should go your second tour is as varied as the career possibilities you have. If you want to stay afloat, being in charge of an 87' can do that... but so can being an OPS on a 225, or an XO on a 110. If you want to go ashore then there are an endless myriad of possibilities to go to.

Essentially there is no "right answer" choose whats best for you and then, (here's the secret) no matter what job you get assigned, do the best possible version of it that you can. THAT is how you make O3.
