I heard somewhere that even when on leave you are supposed to wear a uniform in public? I didn’t hear it from an official source (my friend told me) so I wasn’t sure if it was true. Do you really need to wear it on leave?
If you did I wouldn’t complain I’m just curious.

Yes, Service Dress is required in public for all unrecognized 4 degrees. At your sponsors house you are allowed to change into PT gear.

Leave and Liberty are two different things. During leave periods, at least at the USCGA, you do not need to wear your uniform except for when traveling home and going back to the SA of your choice. Liberty, you must wear your uniform when in a public place (this is only for 4/c at USCGA). I do not know the rules for USAFA but I can't imagine that they would be too different from USCGA.

I believe that is only true for in public within a 100 miles radius of the USAFA and when traveling to/from the USAFA for unrecognized 4 degrees.

Very true, I should have included that in my post. Although, until thanksgiving break not many 4 degrees will venture much farther than 100 miles (even Denver isn't 100 miles, although I have seen many cadets change out when going to Denver).

So If I went home to MA I would need to wear it on the plane? but not when I was just walking around my town?

Correct -- on the plane but not when on leave anywhere outside the 100 mile radius (though I think it might be 150 miles).
Once recognized (week before Spring Break) you can wear civilian clothes on academy ground, COS, etc.

There are definate perks with wearing your uniform while traveling - my son was upgraded to 1st class a few times traveling back and forth to Denver this year.

When unrecognized 4digs sign out on passes, they must wear service dress. When on leave, they travel in service dress, but can wear civies at home/destination.

It's actually 150 miles...basically when you're at home on leave you can change into civies and PC gear once you've arrived at your sponsor's home.
