My DS has accepted his offer of appointment to USNA. However, last week he had a lacrosse injury that resulted in an ACL / meniscus tear. He has surgery scheduled next week. He has every intention to still attend the Naval Academy for C/O 2026. He’s reached out to his BGO for guidance and still waiting to hear from medical about next steps. Any insight from anyone that has gone through this?

Hello. There is a USMMA student (CO 2025) that broke his collar bone about 2 weeks ago playing LAX. I saw the post on USMMA but I cannot find it tonight so the mom may have decided to take it down. I believe I recall them saying their son had been DQ’d until the surgery happened and he can be re-evaluated. I do remember they had reached out to Mr. Mullen. They also have the utmost faith their son will heal and report in July. I apologize if any of this is incorrect.
I wish your son a successful surgery and speedy recovery.

In the majority of these cases a candidate is usually issued an LOA for the next class, told to rehab, get back in shape, attend a local college or community college and take a Plebe like schedule. Get good grades and stay out of trouble. Obviously this is all up to admissions, but this is what happens in the majority of these types of cases. Sorry this happened to your DS. Good luck on his surgery and rehab.

There was a c/o 2024 that had a car accident weeks leading up to indoc last year for USMMA. Leg injury and therefore unable to report for indoc. Was happy to see him show up on the c/o 2025 appointments. Now the bubble wrap! 😀

Recommend you reach out directly to USNA Admissions Counselor. BGO's are not supposed to be involved in Medical Issues , and I don't recall this scenario ever being briefed at BGO training. I agree with 'Hoops, I think that is the gouge that I heard, it certainly makes sense, but I probably read it on SAF at some point and don't recall ever seeing it in any official source.

Updating DoDMERB with new medical history is also needed. I am sure they will want certain docs to re-evaluate his medical status to ensure he has a good window for full recovery before reporting in. Unless “working with medical” means DoDMERB in OP’s post? This is not the BGO swim lane.

Tagging @MullenLE for best advice.

My 2024 plebe tore a meniscus and had surgery in February (after the application had been submitted and LOA had been issued). Worked endlessly in physiotherapy and managed to be up and running (literally) six weeks before reporting. Needed in-depth documentation from surgeon regarding status and recovery. The key aspect is that they must be able to report on I-Day fully recovered and capable of 100% participation in Plebe Summer. I can't touch on what happens if they are not, but full transparency with USNA regarding medical condition is critical.

That’s amazing... that your plebe was able to rehab in that little time.

My DS is in contact with the right folks at USNA and getting his path straight.

It would be great to hear what admissions says in this case, if you don’t mind sharing. Always good to hear their guidance. Good luck!

First, Godspeed to anyone who is injured that they’re able to make 2025 (or subsequent I-Days).

FWIW....DD received an email today that stated it’s her responsibility to “report any new injuries or illnesses, including a positive COVID-19 test, that have happened since your received your DODMERB medical qualification...”

Was email directives coming from DODMERB?

It came as a reply to her appointment acceptance from “Nominations and Appointments Office of Admissions.”
This is standard. Any medical issues are to be reported to DODMERB.

Due to his injury, DS has been offered foundation or a civilian prep school with a course load pre-approved by USNA. He will then be able to join C/O 2026 (pending medical approval with his rehab). He does have to reapply for a nomination.
That is great to hear! Congrats!

I'm so happy for him! Good luck to him with his rehab.

Happy to hear your 2024 was able to report on time! My DS just received her appointment for c/o 2025. Torn ACL and meniscus and had surgery in 11/2020. Will be 8-month post-op when reports for I-day. Has full clearance for all activities but recommended knee brace for at least 6 months for sports. Curious, did your DS wear a brace at all during plebe summer? Especially obstacle course! If so, how was clearance requested for it?

They are not allowed to show up on I-Day with a brace. They must be fully mobile without assistance. However, if they have issues with the knee(s) after arrival, they may go to BMU. If a brace is needed at that time, then they will be given one.
