I know West Point is not a music school but I was wondering if there are any opportunities to do music/music theory at West Point for extracurricular sake. I already know about Spirit band, but are there any places where performing music would be allowed? (Like are there any pianos or practice rooms, etc.) Thanks!

Each chapel has at least one piano so the one closest to the cadet area would be in the basement of the Cadet Chapel. No practice rooms that I know of, not like at a traditional college. There was a music class taught at West Point, but it was last offered about 30 years ago. As cadets always have diverse and really unique interests, I think you will find likeminded people and figure out a way to perform. Just ask around a bit once you get there!

There’s a concert piano that cadets can use in a room at the top floor of the library. You also can bring your own instrument, and there are dayrooms or places you’ll be able to find to play. I wouldn’t recommend bringing it on R-day but I had my guitar with me from A-day on. Just don’t plan on storing instruments in the trunk rooms for any extended periods of time. They are not climate controlled and could absolutely wreck or warp a wood body instrument.

In addition to the spirit band, for clubs, there is a string ensemble, and if you sing, Glee club that travels nationally. The opportunities are definitely there. You may just have to hunt them down.
