Our CJCS @ USMA's Graduation

Congratulations to all. Second Lieutenant Askew is the second cadet from a Fairfax County school to serve as first captain. Two years ago E.J. Coleman was both first captain and senior class president. I remember reading only two other cadets had held both positions. Some fellows named MacArthur and Pershing or something like that.

E.J. was a student and football player of mine at Mount Vernon High School. Like all the other cadets and now officers, he was an exceptional student and more importantly, an exceptional young man.

Congrats to all the young people as well.
Would you believe that most high school graduates nowadays have no idea who generals MacArthur and Pershing were? [emoji848][emoji19]

I teach in Fairfax County and most students have no idea who General 'Fighting Joe' Dunford is. They can though tell you the latest activities of the Kardashians and J-Zee or whoever.

When our daughter was in middle school, a class mate really thought Abe Lincoln was a vampire hunter who became president.o_O
Husband and I have always been feeding our DS and his sister extra US Military History knowledge at home.:)

When I hear or read the comment that things have never been worse in this country I say, 177o-1780s, 1860s, the stain of slavery, the indecisions of WWI that cost lives, the Great Depression, the numerous lives lost in WWII but led to the saving of freedom, the repelling of communism in SE Asia, the Cold War victory, various small wars engagements in which I was in part, a part of, such as Grenada, Panama, Lebanon, Liberia, Kosovo, et. al. The current ME conflict has affected just a small number of Americans. Most would rather not know as to not be responsible, accountable, or have a CACO show up at the door. I used to be the first to pack my sea bag for any op leaving the base. Now my son has inherited the same trait and I am proud and scared at the same time. If I could just do one more deployment, I would go to sea or down range with my boy in charge right now.
