Out of Nom. Spots for District

My son received one VA senator letter today - stating sorry - had 385 applicants. Letter further stated that his office communicates with academy to see who has any kind of nom - thus he gives his out to others, as he put it to give as many VA applicants a chance at appointment.
Am not surprised, have tried to make sure son knew how many applicants our state would have - still waiting on other senator and results in jan of congressman.

First - with an LOA, a candidate only needs ONE nomination. Any nomination will do, although if they get more the academy had flexibility in awarding other appointments.
MOC's know this and often times they will "communicate" to see that only ONE nomination is awarded. This way they can give out more nominations and keep their constituents happy.
There is no difference to one with an LOA between a Senator nomination and a Rep nomination.

As has been explained before each MOC gets to have 5 cadets/mids charged to them at one time. Most only have 4 and leave an opening.
So, if a MOC has one per year of that slate of 10 names one will be "charged" to the MOC.
The rest, while not "charged" will get appointments under the part of US Code that allows the academies to offer 150 appointments to those with a Congressional Nomination.
There is also a clause in there that allows them to pick from Congressional nominees by merit enough candidates to fill the class.
This is why LOA's are low in number and relatively rare. They have to be careful with how many they award.

Bottom line - with a nomination, any nomination and appointment will be had by your son.
Hi, our son has received and LOA and we are waiting on a nomination (hoping for one actually). When you say LOA's are low in number, do you have any idea of how many USNA may have sent out this year so far? Or, how many they usually send out? Just trying to get an idea of how many candidates actually have the LOA's at this point. Our reps office has been very kind and helpful, but they are not advancing us any info. we just have to wait and "stalk the mailman" like everyone else :) USNA85 and our Reps office did tell us the same thing: the MOC's staffers do compare lists in order to maximize the number of names on each MOC's slate so each name should only get one nomination.

The number of LOA's issued by the academies is tightly controlled through admissions. There won't be many more going out now except for the most highly qualified candidate - since the cycle in in the nomination process.
Once the nominations are issued - there is no point in issuing an LOA - the academy will just issue an appointment.

LOA's are issued prior to the nomination process to let very highly qualified candidate know they have a spot in the next class. Number wise - I don't know but I have heard that they issue about 200. Perhaps a BGO knows the answer to this more accurately. Since about 1500 appointments are issued you can see that 200 is not a big number.
I have no idea how many candidates with LOA's eventually end up accepting their appointment - I suspect this would be a closely guarded secret.

Remember that a number of those with LOA's won't have any trouble getting a nomination as they are in a less competitive area or already will have a Presidential or other service connected nomination. I suspect the number of those with LOA's who fail to win a nomination are quite small.

Dear Just a mom,
Thank you for that. It puts the LOA thing in better perspective. Perhaps a BGO will come on and give a more firm estimate of current LOA's. I certainly understand they don't issue any more LOA's after nominations are announced. We are now sweating a little bit less...
