Hi everyone!

I'm a bit anxious and am in need for a little input or advice. My BGO is requesting for me to send him a typed paragraph of leadership positions, responsibilities that I have in/out of school, etc. One of them is to explain leadership in outside of school activities. Here's the issue: I don't hold any leadership positions outside of school, nor am I involved in extracurriculars outside of school. I'm not entirely sure what to do. I'm incredibly involved in my school clubs with many leadership positions, but I'm afraid that not being as involved outside of school will hinder me. I'm not sure how to tell the BGO or what to say. Thoughts or opinions?

Haven’t you ever had a part-time job?
Not while in high school (middle school I was in a paid program and was a cat-sitter), but this year I have a tutoring job at the college that I'm dual-enrolled in.

Your BGO is probably just looking for a bit of info about you before the interview. We don’t have access to this info…cannot see your application. So don’t fret about it.

In general, in all interview situations, always present your perceived negative situation, in a positive light. Vs negative. Bc there is something positive in everything! Dog for it.

Instead of saying ‘I don’t have any’, try framing it differently. ‘While I don’t hold a formal leadership position presently, in middle school I xxx and was (promoted, trained, responsible for, etc) yyy’. Or ‘I’m responsible for (whatever area of responsibility you have)’. Don’t loose the opportunity to show where you have responsibilities. True, it may not be a formal leadership position, but never give up the opportunity to shine where you can.

Your BGO is looking to get to know you. Be yourself. Be comfortable. And shine! Also, maybe ask the adults in you life where they see you as a leader/responsible person outside of school. Maybe through volunteerism, church, mentoring youth, helping elders, oldest in charge of younger sibling, etc.

Good luck with your interview!

Just Do It is correct...we know very little about Candidates before we meet with them. All the BGO is doing is looking for some preliminary information that you can discuss in greater details when you meet. This is not intended as a "test" -- just provide the information requested , and be prepared to discuss.

The important info being sought is LEADERSHIP POSITIONS. They can be in school or out of school. Many successful candidates have one or the other but not both. This is not something to be worried about.
