DS did an overnight visit at West Point this past weekend. except for during the football game (it poured the entire time ha ha), the weather was perfect and we were able to appreciate what a beautiful place West Point is. I have to give the admissions office kudos for a great informational, briefing and tour for the parents. they made themselves available after the tour and talked to us individually and answered any questions we had. I never felt rushed at all.
More importantly, DS loved his time with the cadets who were plebes, (which kind of surprised me.) He said they were very welcoming and he said they all seem to really really like it there. he said he really felt comfortable and could see himself there.

Well done West Point!
now it’s just that long wait on nominations…

Do you know what company he hung out with? My DS Pleab is the cadet in charge of assigning cadets who they pair them up with.

How are cadets selected to accompany overnight visitors? DD attended the SLE this summer, and her assigned leader said her overnight visit was unhelpful. The person she was paired with did very little, resulting in a rather dull experience for her. I'm inquiring because DD had a fantastic time at SLE, where she also successfully completed her CFA. The first thing she said to us when we picked her up from SLE was: "It was so much fun!" and expressed her definite intention to apply to West Point. However, she's now contemplating the possibility of pursuing ROTC at a private school instead. She has a LOA and has finished both her WP and AROTC applications. The idea of an overnight visit seemed like a way to find her answer. Yet, we are concerned about the potential of wasting both money and time, especially considering we reside all the way across the country on the West coast.

Especially since your daughters has an LOA, I recommend that your daughter contact her regional commander (i.e., Far West, in your case) and request an opportunity to visit for an overnight. Hopefully they can accommodate the visit.

One other potential additional 'set of information' for your daughter is the documentary, Surviving West Point. It provides some good insights. I ask my students to watch it if they aspire to go to West Point. It is 14 episodes from National Geographics and quite informative. You can find it on Prime Video through the streaming service.

A summer SLE experience, is different than a school year immersion experience. If she is on the fence, reaching out about an overnight sounds like a great way to help her decide.

DD is leaving tomorrow for an overnight visit on Monday. We are also in the West Coast. She was curious if she could request for a particular cadet who’s currently in the cheer team at West Point. She’s in varsity cheer team at her school and would love to continue it when she’s at SA. I think it’s too late for her to request now. She did both SLE & NASS in the summer. She was also fortunate to attend the inspire program (overnight visit ) at USNA in March. She’s very excited about this trip as this will help her to make decision between USNA and West Point. I will keep you posted when she returns.

It depends on the company. My DS said he first asks for cadets that are interested in having a prospective cadet, outside of volunteers, I'll have to ask him. The companies are given incentives to have visitors, so it can be competitive.

One thing my DS was considering when making the choice was what kind of college experience he wanted. He had an ROTC scholarship, and accepted to Texas A&M Engineering, which would have given him a little more of a traditional college experience even though he would have done the Corp of Cadets. ROTC is mostly college experience with some military. Service Academies are mostly military with some college experience. Through all the feedback during his exploration, thats what we concluded. He is extremely glad he went the USMA route.

honestly, I think he told me the company nickname but I can’t even remember what it was and I’m not sure I should name it on this forum if I did.
just let your DS know that his classmates did a really great job in making a high school senior feel comfortable and represented West Point very well.

DD just got back from an overnight visit last night. She really liked it there. She also attended the SLE this summer and really enjoyed it.
This time she learned that the professors at WP were passionate and engaging and there was a good mix between military and civilian professors. Everyone is kind and there is a culture of selflessness. The campus is really nice but walking anywhere is usually about a mile walk. DD is currently a cheer captain. Her cadet host was also a cheer captain in high school and she’s currently in the cheer team at WP. DD got to practice with the cheer team and talked to the coach. She can see herself at WP and feels like she is more similar to the people there.
My husband accompanied DD on the trip. They flew into New York and spent the weekend there. On Sunday afternoon they took a train from Grand Central station to Peekskill (the journey took 1 hour, costs $20/person on weekends, $14 weekdays ). Then from Peekskill to WP is another 25 mins by Uber ($20). The day before checking DD in, they stayed at Thayer hotel ($110/night). They both had a wonderful time. I made a dozen of WP cookies for DD’s cadet host as a token of appreciation. She loved them.
