Parentless at I-Day

Ticket

My DS received his airline ticket yesterday. BFE 2/18:Acceptance sent out 2/28: airline ticket 3/31. He will be signing up for the B&B this weekend.

who all is allowed to come with you? is it just family or could it include like a close friend or girl friend.

I'll put in a plug for the B&B program. I did that as well back in....2006. O_O.

It was a great experience. There were three of us and my sponsor family was great. I still keep in contact with them today!! Ironically, someone from the CC forums who was class of 2011 (now 2012) ended up with them the year after by chance. Since she was quite the rambunctious one, I was able to have my B&B dad scare the crap out of her for fun. It was good laughs for all involved! ;)

These families usually do this every year and really enjoy it. They like grilling up a hearty meal (even though they know it, nor breakfast, will be eaten!) and spoiling the incoming basics before they are off to the gates of Hell. :D

I have no regrets not having parents there, I had a good time before the cadre got a hold of me! (still had "fun" after that too. :) )

can some one explain what the b&b is? and maybe like explain what the other various options are

The Bed and Breakfast program is sponsored by the Association of Graduates. It is a program where candidates who are travelling to COS alone before I-Day are paired with a local family. The family will pick up the candidate at the airport and take them home with them to stay overnight before going to inprocessing. The family will provide a good supper the night before, and a good breakfast before taking the candidate to USAFA for the inprocessing. They are like a surrogate family for the incoming candidate. They will answer questions, provide support, and just be there for the candidate. Sometimes the sponsor family will have several candidates at their house, and you will have the opportunity to meet and talk to some of your future classmates.

These families vary from single active duty officers, to young married officers with kids, to retired military couples with grown children.

I cannot say enough good things about the program. Our son participated back in 2007, and he was paired with a retired AF colonel (who is also a USAFA grad) and the colonel's wife. This couple went on to become our son's family for Doolie Day out and are now his permanent sponsor family at USAFA.

Last year I saw parents, grand parents, siblings, friends, girlfriends. I bet you hardly know they are there that morning.

Tagging along with hornet, I also am a big fan of the AOG's B&B program. I was put with a family with one other appointee, but our family met with another for dinner, so there were 5 or 6 of us who go to hang out. It was great to have people to inprocess with, and i actually kept somewhat in touch with them over the 4 years we were there.

I know its been stressed before, but whether or not parents attend I-day should be completely up to the appointee. Some appointees want parents there, others (like myself) wanted that one night to get focused and get over the emotional portion of starting a new journey.

oh, and scraper, i love the patch. looks oddly similar to one i have ;)

I would suggest that if parents can make it to Acceptance Day in early August go as it's a big day in your cadet's career. They become full-fledged cadets and get their shoulderboards pinned on. You only have a couple hours with your son or daughter but it is memorable. If you have to chose between A-Day and parents weekend definitely go to parents weekends as you'll have many more activities and time with your cadet. Can't believe it's almost been a year since our son reported for I-Day!
