For anyone who has a peanut allergy did you take the oral challenge before you were DQ'd? I have a candidate who has a peanut allergy (diagnosed as a toddler) When they have a peanut butter cookie or a peanut their throat gets scratchy and they feel a little constriction. But is goes away in less than 30 min. They have never had to use an epi-pen , etc. Never a big reaction. His family is thinking they would get an allergist to do the oral challenge and have it at his DODMERB physical. This is for the class of 2024. Parents are trying to get ahead of the game.

My son declared peanut allergy and then became DQ. Before oral challenged allergist performed bloodwork to determine severity of allergy at a protein level. It was determined it was safe to proceed with challenge. Son passed the oral challenge.

What you are describing above in an anaphylactic reaction and an allergist will not due oral challenge because it is not safe. Any constriction in the throat or lungs can turn into a medical emergency very quickly.

If you are asking as a BGO , I would strongly encourage you not get involved in this issue and render any advice. You are stepping into a minefield.

Feel free to steer the parents here and let them ask the question themselves if so inclined, but as a BGO your answer to the Candidate should be that we don't get involved in the DODMERB /Medical process and encourage them to contact DODMERB or Admissions Medical.

Got it. I misstated it is a candidate who is not one of mine but asked me at a meeting I attended for our Senators and I was curious how others handled it.

Yep and sometimes they smash those jars of peanut butter on their heads...it’s literally everywhere.
