Personal Sidearms

I've heard since the Coast Guard is a federal law enforcement agency as well as an armed service that officers can carry either their service sidearm or a personal sidearm... when does this apply? offduty, or just on duty on base? I'm not sure what the rules are, and I know the laws vary from state to state...

Anyone's take on this?

You will not carry a govt. issued side arm off duty (nor all that often on duty, certainly not as an officer).

And....probably goes without saying, but you will not carry a personal sidearm on duty....
