Hello!
I am currently applying to USNA for the Class of 2026 and need some advice on the logistics of the personal statement.
The Essay Prompt reads:
"In a well-organized essay of a total of 300 to 500 words, please discuss both of the following:
(1) Describe what led to your initial interest in the naval service and how the Naval Academy will help you achieve your long range goals, and
(2) Describe a personal experience you have had which you feel has contributed to your own character development and integrity.
(Limit 3500 Characters)"
As you can see, the prompt states that the essay should be "a total of 300 to 500 words" with a "Limit 3500 Characters". This Character Limit is also listed on the space to submit my essay and when you go over it, the system gives you an error. I'm confused because they have given a word limit as well as a character limit. For the other service academies, the essays only have a character limit. Thus, when I wrote my USNA essay, I followed the character limit given, as I assume many candidates to multiple academies will do. I finished my essay but am now realizing it is roughly 600 words - 100 words over the word limit given.
I'm wondering if the word limit must be followed or is just a recommendation put in place so that candidates don't write a 3 page essay (which my essay is far from - keep in mind 100 words is about a paragraph more). Systematically, when I input my 600 word essay that follows the 3500 character limit, my application saves with no errors, meaning the system only cares about the character limit. Therefore, if I did submit my essay as it currently stands, I would not have any technical errors due to my essay being over 500 words.
I have a couple questions regarding this. Should I follow the word limit even though the system gives a character limit that allows me to add more? Since, the word limit is only listed in the prompt, while the system only counts characters, will anyone even see the amount of words my essay is? Will the admissions team see (or even care if they did see) that my essay is 100 words over the word limit in the prompt? If the admissions team did see that my essay is over the word limit, what would they do?
Also, for other applicants to USNA, what are you doing for the personal statement?
Thank you in advance for your time and assistance!
