If military service is what you want I would suggest in addition to the service academies you look into the state maritime academies (SUNY Maritime and it's ROTC or the SIP program.) As a PA resident you can get instate tuition. I would also look at the Citadel, VMI and Norwich and their respective ROTC programs. Their is also the two year programs at NMI and VF where you can graduate with an AS and a commission as a second lieutenant. Then finally their is always full ROTC scholarships. My suggestion is keep your options open and look into other things. CAPT Mark Kelly USN (ret) has a twin brother CAPT Scott Kelly USN who graduated from SUNY Maritime also an astronaut.

Well I've got to say that I thought my post would generate some controversy and debate and you guys did not disappoint me. Also have to say that I respect a well-presented argument and the passion for your alma mater. Will also have to agree to disagree however as you will not win me over to that side of thinking. You did not yet, however, answer my question, "you did take an oath of office" into the United States Naval Reserve, didn't you?....any service academy where a fundamental comittment is to serve in the US Navy Reserve is a military academy....sorry. I served with several squared-away, patriotic KP alumini who were solid leaders....and I was proud to call them my brothers-in-arms, just as I am as proud of my son going to my sister academy as if he had gone to USNA itself....regardless of his service selectin upon graduation.

Let's define what is military academy and what is service academy. I don't think you realize this but your plebe candidate will take their oath of office as a midshipman USNR (SSO) come acceptance day and be according to the navy be put on inactive reserve status. That's one reason why Kings Pointers don't get their academy time counted towards retirement like the other academy people. Also should they go active duty they can get the GI Bill. That's right they can, I know because I was active duty and got the GI Bill. Kings Pointers get the GI Bill because by law Kings Point is a federal service academy and not military academy. So we can quibble about the details but the reality is it's a federal academy.

OK totally confused by that last post tankercaptain, but like I said....we'll agree to disagree.

All I can say to this thread is enough!!!!!

A potential applicant came in, asked a question that they did not know the answer to and was treated, in my opinion, in a way that does not make anyone want to attend the fine institution we are graduates of.

A simple answer is all it needed. Fellow alumni think of it this way: do you want as many applicants as possible applying which will allow the admissions department to pick the best of the best even though the applicant may not yet have completely sold themselves on a maritime career OR do you want applicants to shy away and leave us picking from a smaller pool leaving lesser qualified applicants to be accepted?

A rhetorical question because as of now this thread is closed.
