A technique that past Basics have used is to put a small photo inside their Bible (if you bring one). I haven't read over the past 5 years of a Basic having their Bible or that small photo, if in Bible, confiscated. Having said that, as noted above photos aren't generally allowed. Your cadre will make clear the rules for your Basic group -- sometimes things loosen up a little over Basic and some (emphasis on some) cadre may allow you to receive/keep small photos sent in letters as Basic progresses. It's best to arrive without disallowed things and then see how things go in your group/with your cadre as Basic progresses -- if cadre make allowances then do what your cadre allow you to do -- rules may not be consistent between squadrons or (sometimes) even within squadrons (especially if group is not meeting performance requirements). The harder you and your group work -- perhaps a little slack will be given over Basic. Don't draw negative attention by violating rules -- it's only 6 weeks. You can make your way through by doing your best, showing consistent effort and following the rules.
