Piercings

Saw plenty of Mids with piercings other than their ears. Some got them while we were Mids. For the sake of Plebe Summer take them out. You will be running around in dirt, water and do all kinds of stuff. Risk of ripping any earrings out regardless of location is high. One item of note... USNA is about following rules. So when you get to USNA read the regs front to back. If you decide to put them back in after Plebe Summer, if it's against regs, and you have a medical issue due to the piercing (such as ripped out) be prepared for conduct action.

All they do is take a picture for the record. You can leave them in. (Knowledge based on plebe summer 2016).

Just to clarify, (based on what everyone has posted here) it is not advised to leave it in for fear of it being ripped off but you can leave piercings on? I have standard love piercings and a cartilage piercing.

I don't know what those terms mean, but regular nipple piercings were not an issue last summer. They just had to document it in medical record (including a photo).

There is a form to document such things when you receive your appointment. They also ask you again on I day.

You can't wear the cartilage piercing in any uniform. If they allow the nipple piercing, you will definitely be at your own risk.

You definitely don't want that in. The chances of it getting ripped out or causing an issue is pretty high. You will be changing uniforms, running around, climbing over stuff, wear life jackets, flak jackets and doing all kinds of stuff. Last thing you want is for that to be an issue. My room mate had one 1/C and was forced to remove it.

Hoops, congrats on the new title and added responsibility!!! :D

Totally agree with Hoops. I had my belly pierced (I lived in a country where I wore a sari to work every day--so it made me feel like my constantly on display abs were more interesting--everyone in my family: husband, three boys, hated it)...however, the belly piercing is hard to keep clean--and hard to keep from getting stuck in your clothes. I think that some of the PEP activities during Plebe Summer and all of the 'uniform races' would make having this piercing in during the summer both inconvenient and perhaps place you at risk of injury, tearing, and infection. (I am thinking about low crawling here, too.)

You do not want your belly piercing to get infected. It is both yucky and painful--a constant distraction/discomfort. You can treat it with antibiotics again and again but you can never get rid of it and have to remove the piercing, allow it to heal and then re-pierce--if you so decide. (I speak from experience here--got infected scuba diving off Koh Samui and the process of removing my piercing was both ridiculous, memorable, and painful--Beloved with knee on my hips with his Leatherman.)

Again, I thought it looked really awesome--but I wouldn't recommend it for Plebe Summer. If you are pierced, I would put the belly ring aside for the summer. Up to you for the academic year when the schedule includes less vigorous PT and low crawling and more showers. Also, I would, of course, learn the regulation--you wouldn't want someone ratting you out for having a contraband belly ring.

Would nipple piercings have to be taken out to go to the academy? The order states anything that can be seen in pt gear and those can't be seen. Also would I be able to get my ears pierced while at the academy after Plebe summer?

Navy Regs does speak to nipple rings....they are not allowed...This topic is approached from both a medical and decorum perspective.
