Hello,

I play the bagpipes, and the pipe band at USNA definitely interests me. Does anyone know the time commitment to the band, and if it is an audition band? Also, will the fact I play, aid my application/ give me an upper hand as a candidate? Thanks,

Griffin

I don't think the drum and fife group has much of any sway on Admissions.

I also thought they had not been official for a year or two now, but I'm probably wrong.

USNA Pipes & Drums is quite active. See their FB page -- https://www.facebook.com/USNAPnD . DS was on it '21-'23 and enjoyed it, but did grouse a bit about the two hr/day practices several days a week. No audition needed. Several trips each year. Pipes provided, if needed. Might be worth a quick mention on your application as a USNA extracurricular activity (ECA) of interest.

Not your question, but the Coast Guard Academy also has a pipe band that was started in the last few years. As a D3 school, recruited athletes are a little different than a D1 school, so they give equivalent consideration to performing arts as they do to athletics (my cadet was a "recruited performing artist").

I wonder if this is applicable to USNA.

Also my please “walked on” to D&B during plebe summer. Even if you have never played they let them try. Mine ended up committing to it for the year.
