My DD's regional commander called tonight and said it looks like she will not win her slate. He asked if she would be interested in civil prep. Of course, she said yes, but what is civil prep? Does this mean she will be getting the dreaded TWE soon? Or should we still be praying for a miracle to come our way before May 1st?

Definitely accept it. The second year reapply chance is 90% up to get into USMA. And it is possible she will offer an appointment this year if they have a spot later.

Here are some more details from the West Point AOG: https://www.westpointaog.org/about/west-point-preparatory-scholarship-program/

It is a great opportunity. As noted on the site, "A major benefit of WPPSP is this: every candidate who completes the preparatory year with a 'B' average and no grade below a 'C' has an excellent chance of being offered admissions to West Point by the USMA Director of Admissions."

You might scroll down the forums a bit and look at the threads in the service academy prep schools sub forum. There is a lot of good info there. My son is a "self-prep" (not sponsored by any academy) at one of the junior military colleges that all the academics use, and he received a WP appointment in January. These are great programs for motivated applicants.

Bottom line is if your daughter has decided that she wants to go to WP, then by all means pursue that offer.

I agree with @franknd above. There is quite a bit of information regarding civil prep schools. My son is an AOG sponsored prep at a junior military college. It was the best thing to happen to him. Going prep is preparing him for the rigors at USMA. He's made good friends that he will know on day 1. He received his appointment at the end of January. Feel free to DM if you have any questions.

I have mentioned before on this forum that my 2027 DS started with an AOG Sponsored Prep, and was "converted" to a full Appointment. As our FFR explained to us at the time, as USMA is filling out the class, they are picking candidates with certain traits that they are wanting. Leadership, Academics, Athletics, etc. My DS was told that his strength was leadership, and they really wanted him at USMA because of it. However there currently wasnt room for him in the class of 27, so they offered the Sponsored Prep to him for the following year. As it turned out, a slot did open, and he was offered an Appointment in April. As we also were told, Sponsored prep is like a "golden ticket." When the stat say 90% get appointments, thats because typically 10% change their mind. The whole program is geared to ensuring the candidates success. It is very similar to USAFA's Falcon Foundation program.

Also, it is not May 1st. It is an open slate until your kid receive as TWE. A funded prep year is a great way to prepare to be successful when you are admitted to USMA next year. A year seems like a lifetime at 18--but really, it is a great transition year for most kids--who then have a smoother time adjusting to life at a service academy and managing the academic load.

A year of prep is one of the best things to happen to a SA applicant - I think ALL potential candidates would be more successful if this were a requirement. It's not free, but it is fairly inexpensive to take a prep scholarship. Your candidate does not have to reinvent the wheel to reapply. They just have to get A's and B's, get new LOR's, submit transcripts, edit or write new essays, and soak it all up and join a club or two! Scholarship recipients are told by the JR MC's that the appointment is their's to lose, and is most frequently referred to on these forums as "The Golden Ticket". An appointment can show up as late as 1-day before the day your applicant would report to basic training at their SA, and they'd be fine, but if it ends up that no appointment comes to fruition, the year of prep will be the best thing for them. Congratulations! You should be very proud of your DD!

Hello !

I applied for West Points class of 2028 and didn’t hear back until yesterday. (I applied as soon as the application opened last summer) I received a TWE and non appointment letter in my portal. I was fully qualified 3Qd with nomination. I previously spoke with my regional commander and FFR about the possibility of USMAPS and the Civil Prep Program. Since then I have not spoke with my regional commander about this. In February my FFR told admissions and my regional commander I would do this program if offered it. I have been in close contact with my Field Force Rep updating him and he informed me that he will check on my chances and if I can be offered the Civilian Prep Program. Does anybody know if this is possible for me still? Is it too late to be offered a spot? I did receive a AROTC scholarship to UNH as a backup if all paths fail to West Point.

Thanks !
Go Army
