Is there any reason why this kit is so expensive? I understand the 4 year warranty, but $1,608 for some of the computer's specs seems outlandish for my reasoning.

Really makes no difference (answers and these related discussions) - it is what it is and you basically need to buy it regardless, as noted it is generally much cheaper than tuition even at a community college... welcome to the KP family and enjoy the wonderful cuisine at Delano the next four years... it's especially wonderful after sea year if you have the good fortune to sail on a vessel that is a "good feeder" with a good steward.
