Plebe Summer Walk-On

My daughter is part of 2027 recruit class for lacrosse. They just went 4-1 in a committed tournament only losing to UNC by 1 goal, the eventual tourney winner. The talent pool is deep. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from trying out, but it may be a tough hill to climb.

On a side note, I can't tell you how amazing these women are. Unbelievably, athletic. Stayed tuned for more good Navy Women's Lacrosse.
Are you saying the USNA LAX recruits still in HS played as a team in a tourney?

I have never heard of anything like this

Yes. They played in a Committed Tournament in Philadelphia. Almost every top D1 program was represented. I have no idea if this is new thing or not. It's my first rodeo.

That's great. What a great way to start before USNA and or NAPS.

Start the bonding early. This will help with lax a tiny bit it may help with those considering leaving a lot more. Tough to walk away from team mates you know.

I have never heard of similar for any sport.

My HS age club team did put on a mini tournament small sided and the only ones we invited were college teams.

I do have one coaching victory over the USNA :)

But that friendly match was on the Yard in front of lots of lots of mids cheering , and ultimately disappointed , against us.

Excellent point. It seems to me that's a bit of an advantage to have a core group prior to getting to Annapolis. We'll see.

Congrats on the win. It always feel good to quiet the crowd.

Yes Beat Navy was our call that night :)

I know it’s a grind at the USNA but I think those lax programs men’s and woman’s are going to be good for a long time.

Two national level top coaches.

Does womens LAX becoming a Varsity sport for USNA change this ‘club recruit’ team thing?

Woman’s lax at USNA has been a varsity sport “I believe” as long as the current coach has been aboard.

USNA just went out and hired a hall of fame coach and she started the program . Stole her from U of Maryland

Wait. Didn’t something just became Varsity?Rugby? I thought it was LAX 🤔. Apologies!

So the answer to the crux of my wondering is ‘no, being a varsity sport doesn’t affect club-recruit teams’.

LOL. You will appreciate that one of the recruit team victories was against a combined Army/PSU team. So, they are 1-0 against Army already even before getting an appointment. :)

I think it was women's rugby going varsity - women's lacrosse has the varsity team and a club team.

yes it is nice for the recruits to get to know each other before heading to plebe summer - as long as covid stays at bay your girl will have a visit at USNA with all the recruits - get to watch practice and hang out with the team - mine did not get this bc of covid - but they did have this official visit last fall for the class of 26 recruits - the girls had a lot of fun!

At one point Navy had more womens sports than any school except Stanford. Not sure where it stands today, but guessing it’s still high. I think USNA is looking for that smart, savvy, athletic young woman. Sports teach leadership and followership. Same thing for men, but service is still a male dominated world and it does take a special young women who wants to pursue this path (same for young men). Athletes tend to fit this well for USNA. It’s also why SEALS recruit heavily at things like NCAA water polo and wrestling tournaments. Those athletes possess the traits that succeed and do well.

And yes, Varsity Rubgy is the new varsity sport. The program has been extremely successful for decades. They actually get a ton of athletes from other sports. Lots of ‘I was recruited for x, but quit and joined rugby.’ It will be interesting to see the program go next level.

Interestingly, the Service Academies are exempt from Title IX. Athletic Director Gladchuck stated USNA fielded the 2nd most Div 1 teams of any Div 1 program. Mr. Gladcheck stated Stanford was 2nd until Stanford dropped a few teams and Navy slid into 2nd. Believe Harvard has the most Div 1 teams of any university. Nice that Navy continues to add (women) teams where not required. Next topic Conference Realignment?

Title IX does not apply to an educational institution the primary purpose or which is the training of individuals for the military services of the United States or the merchant marine. 20 U.S.C. § 1681(a)(4); 34 C.F.R. § 106.13.

I am not even going to touch the conference stuff. It opens Pandora’s box.

It’s not if the USNA is bound by title 9

but there has been an explosion in woman and girls sports because of 9.

I can’t but believe that Navy, bound by 9 or not, likely has varsity and just as important club teams now for woman it might not otherwise have had. Other schools have them .

And the quality of female varsity athletes must have improved as well because of the increasing number of girls playing at the HS and club level.

The single two most major changes in sports my many decades , that stand out to me , is how drastically things changed after integration of the sports and how girls and woman’s sports absolutely exploded in my life time..

In HS it never dawned on me that woman might make excellent ball players in any sport. I saw alien space ships as often as I saw young girls playing competitive sports.

my daughters ended up being much better than I in sports and I loved sports

And virtually all my GDs are flirting with playing in college some day.

I think title 9 to be one of the most important pieces of legislation in my life time.

It’s also interesting to see females crosssing over into traditionally male sports. Like football. We have Several high school football teams with a female kicker or player on them, one kicking a significant goal in the state championship game!

And our high school female wrestlers are getting college scholarships at a rate not ever seen in any female sport!

Speaking of Water Polo - does anyone know what time and how often the men's water polo team practices? Also, do they have team tables at meals and/or a spring travel training trip?
