There are many, many generous sponsor families in and around Annapolis. My husband and I wanted to carry on the military tradition of bringing junior folk into our home, especially those far away from their own. Way way back in the day last century, when women made up only 3% of the officer corps, I was and remain deeply grateful to all the officers senior to me who invited me to their homes for holiday meals and casual family time.

We are paid back a thousandfold by being invited to weddings (several a year), being considered "sponsor grandparents," gaining new friends among the parents, and still being the hotel of choice when reunions bring the extended alumni sponsor family back to Naptown. Had a few tears this past Sunday when over a dozen Mother's Day cards arrived in the mail from current and alumni sponsor sons and daughters.

During this crazy intersessional time, we will have 7 firstie women at the house tomorrow night, as they are in the process of bailing out of Bancroft Hall and are itinerants in search of racks. My husband has already stocked up on Diet Dr. Pepper and chocolate ice cream. Cheerful bedlam.
