Good Afternoon All, I am late the HPV vaccine discussion. If you are not prepared to move on this, cannot find it in your area, or cannot afford it/not covered by health insurance; please know that it is covered by TRICARE and you new cadet will have the opportunity to receive the HPV series once they are at the Academy. There is a new 9 strain HPV vaccine--which is being offered by TRICARE through the Military Health System.
Here is a primer from the American Society of Mircobiology...also WebMD has a good primer, too--if you are unfamiliar with this shot. This shot is a 'nice to have' but not a necessity. If you have never thought about being a woman and experiencing the annual woman's health exam, the HPV vaccine can help to reduce the risk of negative PAPs and cervical cancer as well as vaginal warts. As a public health intervention, it is only given to young women (most at risk of cancer) but as an individual health intervention, it is also given to young men who may be carriers of HPV and can reduce the risk of anal cancers. Further study alone will inform whether immunization can reduce the incredible recent increase in the US in neck and throat cancers linked to HPV.

If you have had the four strain series, there is no real public health benefit to getting the 9 strain series--but your future cadet should know what he has so that he or she can say, "No thank you."
